Can you explain AIDS and how it affects the immune system? How does HIV become AIDS?

The major needs for the future include an effective preventive vaccine, new drugs, better understanding of the long-term side effects of the current drugs and improved health care delivery to people in the developing world. Perhaps the most important short-term need is effective prevention strategies. AIDS is a preventable infection; better prevention will significantly decrease the tremendous burden HIV infection places on humans around the globe.

Miracle cures have been touted for centuries for all types of diseases. There is no evidence to support a claim that any medication, supplement or "natural way" can "rid the body of HIV." HIV can not be cured. Antiretroviral "cocktails" used in the treatment of HIV disease work by inhibiting viral replication. This allows the immune system to heal thus preventing complications of HIV disease (AIDS). The body of scientific evidence supports the use of these agents in the fight against HIV and many clinical studies support the efficacy and safety of these medication combinations. All medications have potential side effects and this needs to be balanced against the inevitable course of untreated HIV disease. Unproven therapies that do not suppress the replication of HIV may lead to immune system failure and eventual clinical symptoms and death. People with HIV are urged to discuss any unproven therapy with their personal physician before relying on claims made on the internet.
