Add CommentWait, you're saying in the last paragraph that an LCD model uses more energy than equal-size CRT? No way. Look at computer monitors; the LCD flat panels use less than half as much power than CRT ones despite the higher resolutions they usually support.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisI have heard that HDTVs use much more power than regular definition, but those of us who will be using the analog-to-digital converters for older CRTs are clearly not to concerned about HD. Also, how much energy is needed to make and ship the converter box, as compared to a new TV?
Some new TV's, Like Toshiba, have two start modes: a "fast" start that is fast and an energy saving mode that takes a bit longer.

Another great resource to check out is the Green Efficient Guide http://www.greenefficientguide.com. They list all energy star rated tvs and electronics along with their power usage so you can find the most efficient tv by brand or size.
