Add CommentWater also expands as it freezes. Ever put a beverage can or bottle in the freezer and forget to take it out before it freezes? If not, try it!!! LOL

I heard a radio interview with one of these researchers & it differed substantially from the report above. The report I heard, said there were two separate groups of researchers. Those researching Elephant Seals were entirely separate to the oceanographers. The data fro the Elephant Seals was a piece of serendipity for the oceanographers, not a planned tactic to find or confirm the presence of an AABW.

In view of recent deletion of selected comments & even deletion of all comments from numerous articles in SIAM recently, I and other commentators are reluctant to research & post comments. If you invite comments, it is my opinion that deleting posts other than the excessively abusive or obscene, is a breach of faith.
Water does expand as it freezes but the floats displacing only the amount of water it did when liquid.

put ice in a bowl of water and take note of the water level, when the ice melts there will be no change.
I like that this article mentioned ozone depleting chlorofluorocarbons as one of the reasons for suspecting another AABW. On related note, my neighbors are flower farmers, and still use the ozone depleting pesticide, methyl bromide, which is being phased out. Do search for "Mellano Methyl Bromide". Hopefully this new AABW sink will bring more attention to the importance of continued regulation of ozone depleting substances. By the way, in regards to first comment about putting beer in the freezer and it expanding, another thing that is interesting is putting distilled water in ice cube trays. When it expands it makes little ice spikes aka stalagmites.
