This year, pending capital approval, Simon plans to install an energy-saving device on the mall's water pumps that allows more carefully gauged power use, much like a light-bulb dimmer switch.

"You do have to make that initial expenditure, but we find that it is worth it," Morris said.

    I know of a couple of university campuses that could really benefit from this program. I'd often have reason to travel through the campus where I studied during evening hours, and even with almost nobody around to take advantage of facilities, EVERYTHING was on 100% of the time. Considering the size of the campus, it's not unreasonable to estimate their losses to power generation were on the order of 4-5 figures every month.
