Fast Food Linked to Obesity, Diabetes

Attention, fast food devotees. If the start of a new year wasn¿t enough to make you change your eating habits, the results of new research might be. A long-term study has specifically linked consumption of fast food to obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Scientists writing in the current issue of the Lancet report that study participants who visited fast food restaurants twice a week or more gained 10 more pounds and experienced double the increase in insulin resistance compared to subjects who indulged less than once a week. "While there have been many discussions about fast food's effects on obesity, this appears to be the first scientific, comprehensive long-term study to show a strong connection between fast-food consumption, obesity, and risk for type 2 diabetes," comments study co-author Mark Pereira of the University of Minnesota.

Pereira and colleague David Ludwig of the Children¿s Hospital Boston followed 3,031 African-American and white young adults ages 18 to 30 at the start of the study for 15 years, monitoring their fast-food habits, weight and insulin resistance. Taking into account television viewing, physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking and other lifestyle factors, the team determined that increases in body weight and insulin resistance from fast-food intake seemed to be largely independent of those factors.

    Thanks for the informative article. It just seems like the world has turned obese at such a fast pace it really is scary. I have struggled with weight for my whole life and finally have a grip on it after 30 years of suffering from diet-itis!! It really helps to know what you are doing and you don't have to work nearly as hard when you do.     Do not go to the link posted above. It is a scam to steal your information. Nice try "JulieRosen." Your link with exact wording was found on 133 different websites for weight loss. Many thanks to Google for cross-referencing your idiocy.

    Now back to the article: It was highly interesting to hear the statistics about diabetes/insulin resistance. We've all been told to be cautionary against dining out at fast food. Tasty but deadly. Sure, organic is good but not always healthy either. Just do your research, keep your food as natural as possible and cooking some fruits and vegetables can be beneficial, especially if you are hypothyroid.

    SparkPeople.com is a good website to join for free and track your weight loss goals and find people who are also trying to be healthier. They are also accredited with the Better Business Bureau.

    Hopefully, my information has been helpful to someone out there.

    Obesity is caused by excess body fat gained due to bad food habits and less physical activities. Also sometimes caused by genes, some chronic diseases, due to medication or psychiatric illness. this has an adverse effect on the health. Nowadays many live on junk food which is unhealthy and brings too many unknown diseases. So one should have control in their eating habits and have a perfect diet to lead a healthy life. This fast food even though better in taste n lures you have them just have control on your taste buds as they have excess of oil and ingredients that harm your body.
