Set in a shadowy world, what looks at first like a hardboiled detective novel ends up being a parable about social mores—their necessity and their evil. I found myself transfixed as Miéville reveals an imagined city’s laws about what residents can see and are forced to “un-see.” When the protagonist looks where he should not, the consequences he faces made me question my assumption that truth should always triumph over illusion.
