NASA will tomorrow launch a spectacular mission to bomb the Moon. Their LCROSS mission will blast off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying a missile that will blast a hole in the lunar surface at twice the speed of a bullet.
The missile, a Centaur rocket, will be steered by a shepherding spacecraft that will guide it towards its target - a crater close to the Moon's south pole.
Scientists expect the blast to be so powerful that a huge plume of debris will be ejected.
The attack on the Moon is not a declaration of war or act of wanton vandalism. Space scientists want to see if any water ice or vapour is revealed in the cloud of debris.
Though the Moon mostly a dry airless desert, they believe ice could be trapped in crater shadows near the south pole which never receive any sunlight. If so it could provide vital supplies for a manned moonbase.
Last year, British scientists identified regions where water might be found on the Moon and estimated that there could be enough to fill one of Europe's largest reservoirs.
The spacecraft will not head straight for the Moon. First it will orbit the Earth a number of times while its precise target is identified. Finally, it will send the missile into the Moon at twice the speed of a bullet on October 8.
The shepherding spacecraft will follow close behind, taking pictures and analysing the ejected debris as it looks for evidence of water. It has just four minutes to do this before it crashes into the Moon itself, producing a spectacular explosion that should be visible in amateur astronomers' telescopes.
It is a busy time for Moon crashes. Last week Japan's Kaguya probe collided with the Moon at the end of its own mission.
The LCROSS mission - it stands for Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite - will launch on an Atlas V rocket together with another spacecraft, called the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
The orbiter will circle the Moon for at least a year searching for potential landing sites for astronauts when they return there in the next decade. It will also look for suitable materials that might support a colony.
The dual mission was due to blast off today but was delayed to make way for the shuttle Endeavour. However, another hydrogen leak means that the shuttle launch has now been delayed until next month.

Add CommentI do not think that they should be bombing the moon for any thing even if it is for water it is not like that if the earth runs our of water where going to go to outer space to get water... NO we will just find a way to get water. but do we realy need to know if water is there we know the moon does not have any thing living on it. so we should just leave the moon to do its job and light up the nights sky like it does to day.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisI'm no scientest so maybe it's just me. But by blasting the moon with such magnitude put the moon in danger of shifting orbit? If it does we won't have to worry about global warming.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThe effect on this planets wether due to a shift in the moon's orbit will be that of omega proportions.
good point - i think human mankind is crossing its limit. we can't just take nature for granted - nature will fight back!!! If it's fighting back with global warming and floods and earthquakes owing to our pollution, it will do worse if we play with space objects... let's not forget that the entire oceans are effected by Moon re: high and low tides. If moon looses orbit or gravity etc. from these explosions then it can affet the water levels in our oceans at some point. Nature is slow but not stupid - it knows how to balance. It got rid of Dinasours, so why can't it not get rid of humans
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to this@InFoRsOmEsCiEnCe456: Seriously? The article clearly states the reason for looking for water, and it's got nothing to do with a "need" on Earth. It's for human use in a potential future moon base. Transporting water from Earth to the Moon is expensive. If there was already water there, you can get there much less expensively.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to this@m1rv9n41v5: thank you for your brilliant insight. Could you please explain why this is stupid? Did you not understand why they're looking for water?
@kocol: This will produce a seriously small blast, comparatively speaking. The amount of energy necessary to do what you think is going to happen would need be thousands of times higher than this.
Let me put it into perspective using an example in one of Sagan's books. He describes how Galileo used a gravity slingshot maneuver to increase its speed. It flew toward the horizon of Jupiter which caused it to increase speed. It then narrowly missed the planet and was flung by the enormous amount of momentum deeper into the solar system. Due to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, this "stealing" of energy from Jupiter wasn't free. Galileo did have an effect on the orbit of Jupiter: in 5 billion years, the Jovian Giant will be one second behind where it should be in its orbit. Given that scale, perhaps you can extrapolate the amount of effect this is going to have on the moon.
Another example: in 2005, an 800 pound impacter was fired at a comet and the collision had NO effect on the orbit of this small object which was only about the size of Manhattan.
With all the war, poverty, international debt thats going on, why spend all that money to see if something exists on a planet we cannot live on? How much use can resources be from the moon? Either way, the earth is screwed bcuz of idiot, money grubbing, power hungry bass terds that run the place.

YEAR 2012
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to this2012 It is a great time to be human. There are many galactic changes coming to our solar system within the coming years, including planetary alignment, the discovery of the Planet Nibiru, inter-dimensional travel, extra-terrestial alien encounters, and the earth polar shift.
Our ancient ancestors of Egypt and Mexico left us evidence of their belief in these things as well.
There are many theorist and scientists who believe a world catastrophe will occur in 2012.
Me and my Staff LucArtStudio (Italy) instead we believe that 2012 will be a glorious time to be human on Planet Earth. It will be a new Era based on a new awareness of life. Based on being and not on having. Me and my staff we show this phenomenon through the current news, video and writings.

Don't forget NASA is run by the military so one wonders what the real reason behind this operation is:
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisDestroying alien bases?
Or intimidating the Chinese or other players in the moon game so the US can claim exclusive ownership?
Not very bright. Water vapor evaporates instantly in a vaccuum. The heat of the explosion will instantly evaporate any water. Looking for water? I don't think this was thought out very well. Either that or NASA is taking a stance that we are all idiots. Ressession, depression, bailouts... What a waste of my tax dollars. Why is the McDonald project, on the moon to monitor its position in space being cancelled right when we are going to shoot it with two megatons of explosives? Nasa, I am sorely dissapointed. I think this is a simple minded mining expedition. Which major conglomorate will own the rights to moon mining?
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisMany possible scenarios may arise. With one-sixth of Earth's gravity, a missile travelling at twice the speed of a bullet may have only one-third of the impact it would on Earth.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisIf ice exists in the extreme cold of the Moon's south pole, it may be so hard and brittle that an extremely huge explosion blasts ice shards and rock far more greatly than is able to be estimated/calculated. As extreme temperature exchange occurs from exposure to sunlight without any atmospheric protection, large masses of water and dust may disperse resulting in unknown consequences which could alter the entire delicate balance of its orbit, with potentially disastrous results here on Earth. For all we know, a designed explosive impact (as opposed to normal meteor impacts without explosive design) in a polar region may upset the balance so greatly that we lose the Moon.
Keeping in mind the tidal influence of the Moon on Earth, remember also that our own bodies are composed of the same percentage of water. Our emotional/water bodies are in tune with the moon, it is in fact where the term 'lunatic' is derived from, luna meaning moon. What if this sudden disturbance sends everyone (and everything) living on Earth crazy?
What if advanced aliens really do have bases on the moon - will they regard this as an act of war and do the Earth a favour and destroy all mankind?
What if, at the end of the day, the results are indeterminable and it results in a very expensive failure? Is it worth the expense? I bet a billion starving kids would beg to differ.
Isn't it easier to recycle all the water on a moonbase that was flown in from earth? Solar cells only work on the sunny side of the moon, you know. On the dark side of the moon one has to fly in many heavy electricity batteries, so what is the point? Or is NASA planning a nuclear reactor as well? The Russian cosmonauts could survive in their space base for a year, recycling water and using solar cells.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thiskovavla, that is the most intelligent response to this article, so far. You are correct, recycling water is very important. If we do find water, it will have to be recycled. Why is it so important for NASA to find water? That is such a minor issue. You are also correct about the battery issue. Where will they find power on the dark side of the moon? The only other important factor is breathable oxygen. No matter where you put the base you need to truck in air. How much will that cost? The plan to grow plants for food and air is ridiculous. Also would have to be on the sunny side. How many contractors are needed to build a moon base? Where do you house them, feed them, etc. What does that cost the taxpayers? What is the purpose of the base anyway? Scientific testing? Of what, and why? Who is the insurance company for all this construction? What does that policy cost, to insure contractors on the moon? How many shuttle flights will it take to bring them up and down? How many will be trained? What does that job pay? Will it be another no bid contract? Does Shaw group or Haliburton get that job? I really don't want my taxes paying for this ridiculous mission. Lets all be serious here. Astronauts will not build a moon base. Robots will not build a moon base. Taxpayers will be forced to pay for contract labor. NASA needs to be stopped. I admit, Hubbel telescope has interesting pictures, but the rest of everything NASA has done... I think they need to be completely shut down. What a gross misappropriation of taxpayer dollars, and for what? US military dominance of space. No, thank you. Placing and repairing sattelites for large corperations. No, thank you. I ask all readers of this article to blog, twitter, email, and call your state and national representatives as well as NASA to stop this insane mission. Save the whales... no - Save the Moon.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisFirst they do not mention the actual size/magnitude of the explosive they are sending, only that it can be seen by amatuers. Next, i doubt we as a world, have a bomb strong enough that could shift the moon, or explode massive chunks out of it. For the person who refrenced HG Wells The Time Machine, the moon collapsed because it was heavily "mined."
The best conspiracy theory we have on this site is the one based on military expectations. the aricle itself reparted that the satilite will be orbiting the planet for over a year. So that means a missle base that is circling the planet. with one missle. close but still weak. Once again, this plan is far from nessacary, but also, people think before you respond to this crap.
Let's see - how can we find out if the ice is receding at the South Pole? I know - let's bomb the place!

One of our guys's is lost in the desert and likely dying of thirst? Well, a bomb run shouldn't just help find him but also locate a likely water source for him!
All of which is to say, surely, if you're looking for an extrememly scarce commodity, you don't do the one thing likely to evaporate it completely out of existence - so what if it proves water was once there? It won't be there any more!
This looks much more like a wrecking crew blasting away randomly into the side of a mountain in the hope of discovering materials that'll make it worth their while carving out the rest of the mountain.
"Bombing" the moon is just a supposedly clever headline. They aren't dropping military munitions on the moon. The reason to determine if there is water on the moon is not to discover an alternate water supply for the earth as some commentators appear to be thinking. It is to determine if there is a native supply of water on the moon to supply future long-term manned missions to the moon. A critical step to future exploration of the solar system. And no Kocol, there is no danger of the moon's orbit being shifted. The impact is not that great in comparison to the mass of the moon, and certainly far less than the asteroids that have smacked into the moon numerous times causing all those great big craters you can see on the face of the planetoid at night [likewise without shifting its orbit].
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisWow, when I wrote my last comment I had only read a few postings, but now I've read more and I start to wonder if you are all insane and did any of you pay even a littel bit of attention to 1) the actual text of the article and/or 2) the science classes you had in high school and College? I'm hoping I'm just the fall guy for some take off on the Onion, but i'm thinking you people are serious with these comments.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisNASA is not using an explosive. It is not a weapons test. It is not evidence of the militarization of space. It is not a modification of the moon. They are crashing a hardened vehicle into the surface to cause a relatively small spurt of material to be ejected into space so its composition can be studied by way of spectrographic analysis [remember that bit in high school when they explained that different atoms return different colors in a spectrograph?]. This has been done before - a couple of times in fact, and it will do no harm to the moon. I again refer to all the great big asteroid craters all over its surface as evidence that a much smaller few hundred pound probe won't do very much to the moon.
This is a straight forward scientific test to determine the viability of long-term missions on the moon. Such missions will need water for drinking, environmental controls, waste handling, developing fuel cell batteries, etc. Water is very heavy. Eight pounds per gallon. Currently the cost of putting 1 lbs of anything into space is tens of thousands of dollars. A long term mission to the moon, supporting several astronauts, would need alot of water -- even with all the intensive recycling NASA is actually famous for -- and thus every supply mission would be hugely expensive if all that water had to be carried from earth. If a water source(s) could be found on the moon and you could build your base right next to it, you dramatically increase both the possibility of pulling off the mission in the first place and the chance the mission will succeed over time. No conspiracy. no space war. It's very basic and has been discussed in the scientific literature for years.
This is the stupidest idea I have ever heard of. These are the "greatest minds of our generation." Yeah right.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thiswith your definition of a real job, nothing is real at all. I'm assuming you mean; Value: contributing to the society. Think of the millions of other jobs out there that add less value than NASA. Sports is a great example. It has great value, it teaches us things. It shows everyone examples of body/mind perfection. Now think of what NASA contributes to the world. it adds valuable technologies. The world we know would never exist without NASA's contributions in insperation, recognition in science and technology. (FIRST's philosophy) You can't count the number of people that were inspired by our space program. Now lets talk a little about true value. In order to stay "human" we need to look past our everyday lives. We need to grow, change and improve. Space is the final fronteer, and without it, we would become like Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 or without curiosity we would become like the unchanging people in Wall-e. Both of these show us what we can turn into. The meaning of life is to question evey aspect of it. Socrates pointed this out a long time ago,"The unexamined life is not worth living." and i believe living like that is hardly life or humane at all.

Go NASA! Most of the comments here are ridiculous. First, the US, evil monster as it is, is not going to bomb the moon. If you think that, you need to re-evaluate your reasoning. Second, if the US did want to bomb the moon, it would not send it off its axis and cause global warming problems for the Earth. I can't even begin with that one. Third, even if this fails, the technology and data which NASA learns from it will help it in later attempts and may eventually impact our lives as well. If we want to go to the moon in 2109, we have to be underway in 2009.

The only risk is... if that missle is armed and swings around the earth a couple of times, then something goes wrong??? ooooh boy.
What I believe everyone can agree on is; we need high paying jobs and we need to stop paying big bucks for energy. Now is the time to exploit space power and resources. Sunlight is available in high Earth orbit 24/7, 365 days a year. We have had the technology since the late 60’s to transmit via microwave all the energy we could ever use, to Earth, from orbit. The material for constructing the space end of the system is available on the near Earth asteroids and the Moon. We the people need the government to fund the project just as the government funded World War II. Our survival as a people with liberty was threatened by mad men with weapons during WWII. Today our survival is threatened by mad men with oil. If we as a people shrink from the task at hand we will lose our liberty.

Creating a base on the moon would eliminate many problems assosiated with the earth's gravity. First the invention of the telescope raised our understanding of cosmos. Second we raised a fog of earth's atmosphere and gained information that sparked many technologies even in the public sector. The only step we have not aquired is a base on another planet or moon, which will allow another giant leap in information and technologies. On the moon they can create energy and use that energy to extract Water, the only element needed to harbor a long term mission. However I do not understand how Nasa is dealing with solar winds? Does the dark side of the moon actually provide shielding for instruments or is the moon at all shielded by the earth magnetic shield?

Hoagland he asserts that when NASA dropped a bomb on the Moon it rang like a bell for an extended period of time making one think that it was either partially or mostly hollow. There were supposedly "anomalies" there AND on the Dark Side and rumor has it the Astronauts were "ushered" away and it is interesting that we've never been back...if we were ever there in the first place. NASA is a highly secretive and occult Agency of the DOD and is quite known to be steeped in symbolism and Masonic subterfuge. I wouldn't trust their Cover Story on a bet. Their actions concerning the Mars Photos left something to be desired, and they certainly weren't very forthcoming being as the U.S Taxpayers footed the bill!
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisIs this a cool thing to bomb on an unknown space at moon ?
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisexperiments can be done only for research purpouse but dropping an 1.5 ton of explosive at a certain place could cause change of the orbital positions or if any radioactive changes occurs in the reflection of sunlight it would only affect humans or if there in any explosive or unknown on non-found reactive materials by nature on moon in a large amount it might also cause immense destruction
In an iterview armstrong told that when he landed on the moon he saw some gaijantic shadows or figures that could be aliens [ I DONT KNOW HOW FAR THIS IS TRUE BUT IT WAS MENTIONED IN A WEEKLY ARTICLE ON ] and this could be like making a war aginst them so i think the only way to explore or research is only by search by satellites or by unmanned robots to be sent and searched but not by bombing and causing destruction
America also plays a leading role in global warmng issue and now it might make the world to be in dark on the night or may even cause the end of the world
"America is not satisfied its war on earth and its inhabitants. It is waging war on space now. Killing human has become too routine and boring for America, it wants to kill the space. Good luck Americans; And you still complain that most of you cant afford medicines."
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisI don't believe Americans are the target. Au contraire, I believe it is the moon. Did you not read the article? Japan just did this last week, and they have affordable health care, Confucism and Buddhism, and haven't tried to kill humans and earth (except for that whole Nanking thing, but who's counting?) You're anti American rant is trite, unfounded, and boring. Tell me what country you live in and I'll tell my boys at NASA to send an LCROSS to explore for water in your hometown.
In the meantime, all inevitable future exploration will be through space so America will be on the cutting edge of this. History is being made. All that we can hope for is that we as humans find a way to consume resources here on Earth in a responsible and respectful way and that we can replenish what we use. We're working on it so give us a break. We're technological adolescents and have many more growing pains to come; don't take the easy route and point your haughty, cocky finger at America.
How about a new Moon-landing mission, and start digging and drilling?

OK, how does this seem like a good idea to anyone? And who gave NASA permission to bomb anything? Is Obama the new world order leader and dictator that he can make decisions that potentially could endanger the whole world? There are scientific documentations that proclaim the effect of the moon on the earth's gravitational pull, as well as controlling the tides of the ocean. What about a huge dust cloud and solar flares? What happens if the moons gravity, which is far less than ours, cannot sustain such a blast to its interior and it severs off chunks of asteroids? Wouldn't they be pulled into our atmosphere easily? What if the density of the moon is reduced by pieces blasting off? What would happen to us in terms of tidal waves and tsunamis? There are prophecies of a huge asteroid hitting the earth and devestating it. I used to watch Carl Sagin talk about it on PBS. There are also end of time prophecies where the moon is supposedly turned to blood and the sun scorches the earth. Tidal waves are supposed to occur. The hours of the days are supposed to be shortened. Not that these prophesies are factual, but
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thiscouldn't a blast like this potentially enable prophesies like these to occur?
The thing that is most concerning to me was the urgency to get the Space shuttle of the ground in June for this mission. Why such a hurry? The "sattelite" will orbit our planet then slingshot to the moon and orbit it for several months. This couldn't be delayed a week or two? Lots of things do not add up with this mission so it leaves educated laymen like myself wondering WTF!

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisI'm not sure considering the moons role in balancing our gravity that it is a good idea but regarding some of the comments here, its not based on the concern of us running out of water, it's about whether there would be enough water on the moon to set the it up as in intermediary base that could support a colony (probably scientist) and to make hydrogen from. It takes in our primitive methods of propulsion too much energy just to get out of our own gravity so to only have to get to the moon, regroup and blast off from there to destinations outward, even unmanned for awhile, it makes sense. I guess risk is the inherent price of exploration and progress.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisI think this sounds CRAZY! It doesn't even make sense. Whatever water might be there will be evaporated in the explosion. The risk to our planet is so great, is that even taken into consideration? Do we the people of the planet get a vote? I vote no!

From the comments, it's obvious that the brutality of an impact on the Moon stirs some strong emotions. Youngsters are used to seeing gently rolling rovers drilling delicately on the surface of Mars to find traces of ancient water. It has to do with distance. If we were able to watch the effect from here, I'm pretty sure we would have started bombing Mars long ago.
First, they know all about the water on the moon, because I know the son of the person who found water in the first moon rocks that was returned in the 60's
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisSecond, I suspect it will not go off. And that is because I truly buy into the fact the moon is actually a hollowed out planet which was turned into an extraterrestial base which is used as a staging point to visit and control this planet.
And finally, since NASA already know these things, I wonder what kind of technology exists in this bomb, that they think it will not be capable of being disabled, sounds very suspicious to me, there is more on the go here than we are being told. but since most of the people do not believe ET's exist, but since I am a ET contact I must believe, they will not consider this.

Tsar Bomba was a 50 megaton bomb tested by Soviet Russia on October 30, 1961. The shock wave from this bomb circled the Earth three times. (I'm only using these bombs as a comparative reference) There's no real magnitude to this bomb whatsoever. The moon gets hit by space stuff all the time, some as big as the probe that will be used to "bomb" the moon, and the moon is doing just fine. In fact, the moon is inching away from us slowly every year by about one inch.
The mass of the moon is 7.347 7 10^22 kg. To completely throw the moon off its current orbit would take an astounding amount of energy, much more than a measly 2-ton weapon.
When an article uses the word "bomb" like this article and a few others, it seems to spark sensationalism and controversy for the sake of readership. Please do some research and look up other sources for information.

they are not bombing the moon this is simply a study to determine whether there is water there. though the moon looks small and delicate in the sky it is actually a little more than one quarter of the diameter of the earth (about 3500km), and sending a small rocket into it`s south pole to eject some debris will cause no more damage to the moon than a small crater. as there is little gravity on the moon and no atmosphere.. in debris not collected will simply drift off into space. much larger objects from space have hit the moon and every day more than a metric tonne of meteorite hits the surface of the moon at much higher velocities. we've even crashed spaceships into it on several different occasions. (http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/28apr_skyisfalling.htm)

this is simply a study to determine whether there is water there. though the moon looks small and delicate in the sky it is actually a little more than one quarter of the diameter of the earth (about 3500km), and sending a small rocket into it`s south pole to eject some debris will cause no more damage to the moon than a small crater. as there is little gravity on the moon and no atmosphere.. in debris not collected will simply drift off into space. much larger objects from space have hit the moon and every day more than a metric tonne of meteorite hits the surface of the moon. (http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/28apr_skyisfalling.htm)
this is simply the equivalent of a timed meteorite impact that will allow us to collect the debris.
THE SKY IS NOT FALLING!!!
it`s too bad that perversions of the truth like this blind the general public to important advances in human knowledge and scientific achievement.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisDON'T BOMB THE MOON!!! ISN'T THERE ANYTHING SACRED ANYMORE? Wwe already know that life isn't sustainable in practicality on the moon naturally, it doesn't even have a high enough level of oxygen to to be lived on (1%) without manufacturing it. Have we become bored and unhappy with destroying our own planet that we have to go and find an alternate target? And naturally this alternative has to be the thing thats closest to us.. The Moon. Earthlings have a sacred special relationship with the Lunar Lady and she already has dry skin and enough craters in her face that have scarred so let's not put that under the microscope too. REALISTICALLY: Who would want to live there permanently without wanting to return to Earth our real mother?
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisthis is not about determining whether life is sustainable on the moon... obviously it is not and no sane person would ever state otherwise: there is too little gravity there to hold an atmosphere. fortunately this is not the purpose of this study. this study is not going to affect the moon in any significant way. the moon is quite large (it has a diameter of nearly 3500 km, or more than one quarter of the diameter of the earth.) and sturdy in her orbit. more than a metric tonne of meteorite strikes the lunar surface every day at much higher velocities than we are looking at in this study without having the slightest effect on her orbit. we have even crash landed spacecraft on her in the past. this is not out of the ordinary. in fact it may help us to understand the origins of "our lunar lady" she's been there for a long time, much longer than we've been around, and has survived far greater meteorite impacts in the past. she will most likely be here long after we are gone, despite our best efforts to "blow her up".
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisthe language and tone of this article give a false impression that stimulates an alarmist attitude in people not educated enough or open minded enough to see that without this kind of carefully thought out study, and without the desire to further understand the corner of the universe that we just happen to be able to perceive to such a great extent for the flash of time that we are lucky enough to have, we would not be in the position we are in and able to understand and appreciate Nature as we are able to currently. with science Humankind has the ability help make many people's lives better through accumulated and applied knowledge, and pursuit of that knowledge if it is to help us to the greatest extent, must continue on all frontiers. not of course without the kind of rational discussion that does occur within the scientific community, and should be occurring in forums such as this.
we should be excited that there are people out there willing to try to work out and explain this for us, and continue to push the limits of our understanding of the natural world in the hopes of using that understanding to promote a better life for the future of our common existence.
I notice that the people here who object to this study do so on the grounds that it violates some sort of aesthetic sensibility they have that they've based on some sort irrationally sacred symbolic or metaphoric ideology. The rhetoric they employ simply reeks of theological undertones, and their arguments have no experimental or scientific basis and are really outside of the realm of their own understanding. They insist on waving their arms in the air and shouting STOP! yet they don't understand that this is not an attack on any of their delusions, and no harm will come of anything as it has been carefully thought out and performed with great precision. This is the definition of alarmism. You are being alarmist. Tomorrow your "grandmother moon" will be right where she's been for billions of years and you will all be space dust!!!!

Just water.

Paul, I'd like to bring to your attention that NASA has never described the centaur rocket stage that will hit the moon as a "Missile" or that it will "blast a hole" in the moon's surface.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisSome people reading this article have found these terms alarming and have even planned pseudo-science documentaries around such language claiming that NASA is firing a two ton nuke at the moon.
I think SciAm should be more responsible in the approach to reporting space news in this fashion and avoid such sensationalist terms, especially when dealing with a public that is potentially ill advised in matters of space exploration and sometimes may not posess critical thinking or research skills and will not check NASA's site or any third part astronomy site to discover it is simply a spent rocket stage, not a nuke or bomb.
While terms like "Missile" and "Bomb" likely work better to convey an idea to the public; while being a hot button term, literally your article may get more clicks from it.
Please do not try and hype or stir up a certain event simply to appear to be more exciting, controversial or threatening. Governments themselves will attest to the detrimental nature of this tactic
half way through wars for instance. Not a great idea.
Thanks.
Jorge. The centaur rocket booster probably weighs in at about the same as a midsize SUV with all its fuel gone, probably around 3-4000lbs. I'm pretty sure larger things have hit the moon it its recent history, say 200 years ago to present ? anybody have some data on that ?
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisPoint is, its a pimple on the ass of an elephant; its not going to change its orbit ONE LITTLE BIT.
So India has been able to discover there is water on the moon without having to bomb it and for only $80 mill. Source http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5h6uIHbXDQoZdMQept8kGCrnlNncQ
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisWhy didn't NASA wait for this information before deciding to spend $579 mill to bomb the moon? Easy, NASA's hidden agenda is to test whether they have the ability to engage in space warfare. This is despite the fact they are a party to the the U.N. Outer Space Treaty, which prohibits non-peaceful activities on the moon. Article IV states, “The moon and other celestial bodies shall be used by all States Parties to the Treaty exclusively for peaceful purposes. The establishment of military bases, installations and fortifications, the testing of any type of weapons and the conduct of military manoeuvres on celestial bodies shall be forbidden.”
There other objective is to collect data to enable them to colonise the moon. This is also a breach of the U.N. Outer Sapce Treaty Article II which states: “Outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means.”
Yet again the US is acting unilaterally and in breach of U.N. Treaties in their never ending quest to dominate and exploit everything in the universe. Mars is next. So now that we know there is water on the moon, NASA can't use the excuse that LCROSS is a scientific experiment and they have no reason to bomb the moon anymore.
I hope they are taken to court for violation of the U.N. Outer Space Treaty.
Almost every channel is showing a news that chandra yan has helped to find out water on the moon. May be this
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisis good news but one more news is being seen that NASA is going to create a blast at the the point where
water is found.
Perhaps NASA is less sensitive but moon is not as, Moon has it's magnetic values too week and it is orbiting to earth
at ninty degree. Means, moon is combing earth's magnetic field each moment. Now, moon's low but highly sensitive
magnetic poles if, gets disburbed and changes its original place than it can create a big trouble to earth's environment
and may cause big damage of tsunamy or earth quake which will be more dangerous then ever. Istead of creating a
blast, NASA can send just some sample of dry copper sulphate which is white in colour. In case of presence of water
it will get blue as naturally copper sulphate contains five time more water in its structure and it is true at any temparature
even at - 400 or + 90 degree. This is not a bad dream but a very sentive warnig to the people of the world.

But it is illegal to bomb the moon. We are not at war with the moon. It is a violation of the UN Outer Space Treaty to test weapons in space. The US is a party to this treaty. Second of all there is a manned base on moon already in "the dark side of the moon". And what can i say about outer space exploration besides that we are looking in the wrong direction, instead of healing our home and leave in peace with our own "families", yes i said families our planet, brothers and sisters we are all one, is a universal law, this is the holographic nature of our universe. That's we search for water on Earth. Explosives are used for oil and other stuff . Meteorites have been pounding the moon for centuries. there no danger in this tiny "bomb" shifting the moon's orbit. we have detonated nuclear weapons on earth and not had the orbit shift.

If there is water, of any kind, it can be converted into oxygen to provide an artificial atmosphere for life. Can you stop dragging your knuckles on the floor long enough to realize the potential of this, not only for space exploration, but the benefits it can provide for our own planet? Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisthe moon's glow is a result of first generation CFL bulbs that were installed over the moon's surface by successive APOLLO missions in the late 60's and early 70's. There are hidden solar panels and batteries on the moon which power the CFLs. This was done in an attempt to minimize the cost of placing streetlights throught the USA. The moon's cycles are a result of having to recharge the batteries following the power drain of a full moon.

Wait a minute. I smell an ulterior motive here. They're not looking for H2O - they're looking for Helium-3. The moon is supposedly loaded with the stuff. When fused w/deuterium it gives HUGE amounts of energy off. (1 kg of helium-3 burned with 0.67 kg of deuterium gives us about 19 megawatt-years of energy output.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThey plan to extract HE-3 to fix our oil dependance by building fusion reactors which will produce cheap abundant electricity. We'll all be on 100% electricity in a couple decades and the Arabs can go F--- themselves!

Water is extremely usful in space travel, but it is a very heavy reource to luanch into space. It is useful for drinking for human survival. Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisSully, you missed my mid paragraph point, it's prcislly that lack of respect for sacred natural objects, or for the sacred period, that allowed Renneassiance European power-brokers to abuse nature's powers to attempt domination over nature and thus over other humans, aka Sir Francis Bacon the occultist. This has lead to treatment of the Earth and its systems and inhabitatns as mere fodder in Modern Man's "Progress", which has yielded the present spate of slow-ecological disasters leaning toward the big one. This same lack of respect has led to this train of events. We are now trying to come to grips with our suicidal devestating treatment of the Earth or Nature while at the same time stuck in a time warp with regard to usless experiements about to be enacted on a distant ball of reflective matter too far away to do anything about should we witness the water plume we are looking for.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThey are drilling in the wrong place. The moon always faces us. Any comets which contain water hit the back side of the moon, or come to Earth. Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThe moon is a dead rock, if there is abundant water there, then the risk of Earth over population is finished. We simply move as many as want to to the moon. Yes, it will be extremely difficult and expensive at first. We will have to create new technologies, but we've done that before and can do it again.
Let's remember that the moon weighs about 81 billion tons. It would take a huge impact to alter it's orbit. Our small probe will be the equivalent of a drop of water in the ocean.

I suppose I should try to explain about the mass of the moon and how they arent actually bombing the moon but are just firing an empty rocket into it or I could try to explain how the moon doesnt have an atmosphere or anyone living on it, or that the reason we want to know if there is water there is to provide resources for a permanent base. I could try to explain all of that but I am not going to waste my time. It is evident that the majority of the worlds populations are just plain too stupid to comprehend such thoughts.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisand it was those "Renaissance European power-brokers" who helped lead us out of the Dark Ages and into a far more healthy, wealthy and wiser world. Additionally, it was their advancements that freed humanity from a hand-to-mouth existence thereby allowing us to pursue arts, sciences and compassion for our fellow man. Sure, we still have difficulties today caring about the rights and well-being of others but we are miles beyond anything they could have imagined 700 years ago. Nature didn't care too much for us while she was murdering 1/3 of the population of Europe with the bubonic plague. It was the advancements in science which began with the Renaissance which allowed us to exert ourselves over nature and thereby continuing our survival as a species. Science is not to blame for the destruction of the environment, especially not now that we know better. Short-sightedness is our problem today. The same problem which plagued our ancestors centuries ago. I don't believe God looks down upon humanity and is angered by our use of logic and reason. Quite the opposite. If we wasted the gifts bestowed upon us by the Creator - that He would find the far greater sin.

The moon's not going to shift in its orbit, it's not even going to flinch, and anything that gets dislodged won't have enough energy to hit Earth. Also, there are no civilizations on the moon. We've been there. We've looked.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisAlso, there is no 'dark side' of the Moon. The moon has the same face pointed to the Earth, but the moon has a day/night cycle just like Earth. There's a FAR side of the moon, but not a permanently dark side. Also, we've seen the far side, there's nothing there.
Relax, everyone. There's nothing sinister about this.

Putting the moon in danger by firing a missle into it? You don't suppose the scientists figured this out? It's not nuclear, doesn't even have a warhead! It's just a rocket. The idea is to see if there is water to support life SENT to the moon. As for those "moonbats" that think we want to wage war on the moon -- well, refer to the previous "moonbat" comment. Some of you really need to get a life. Go home to your wife and kids -- I am. Bye!

If we came out of the Dark Ages into a more healthy, wealthy and wiser world, how come it comes at the cost of our life support systems, which all harkens back to those primitive substances called clean soil, clean water, and clean air, which are pretty basic components of life? How come our climate appears to be exerting a more turbulent involvement in extreme weather events, despite whatever cyclical spate may deemed its cause? How come all the staid edifices of European, or Oriental culture, art, civilizational structures such as palaces, cathedrals, mosques, city gates, intricate art are no longer able to be replicated in our modern temperament for haste, utilitarianism, efficiency, economization which seems to indicate that weve actually LOST our aptitude for luxury, arts, literature, high culture etc!! When has a building worthy of being called a piece of art been built in the modern world, one that draws tourists the way 1000+ year old structures of the so-called Dark Ages draw hordes of tourists to Rothenberg, Oxford, Chartes, Granada, Isfahan, Angkor Wat, Great Wall, etc?. I cannot believe that the poverty rate, the illiteracy rate, the starvation rate, the cultural stupidity rate, the linguistically mute rate is less now than it was during the High Christian and Islamic-Buddhist-Hindu Middle Ages. We are losing our ability to quote Dante, Shakespeare, Emerson, the absolute gem-origins of our modern European languages, with every passing year, how is that Progress! We kill mountains of human flesh with weapons of mass horror-atomic, dismembering, vaporizing, convulsating etc, flashing our quarrels mindlessly across all sectors of human society during our Advanced Wars whereas battle in the supposed Dark Ages was done with humane weapons directed at men only, at an honest arms length, metering human not technological strength and resolve, keeping clear of women children, for real needs, not ideological experimentation of the last few murderous centuries. While the Black Death swept across partially-Renaissance Europe reeking in disdain for bodily cleanliness, hygienically-conscious Muslim metropolises such as Cordoba, Granada etc in the same land mass and Timbuktu in Heathen Black Muslim Africa displayed schools, orphanages, universities, public baths and fountains and waterways, gas-lighted streets, water fountain lifts and self-reciprocating pumps and gadgets of all kinds, spice, fruit, veg, meat, gem, fine textiles, carpet, falconry, art and coin markets, sciences of algebra, optics, astronomy et al. China the same. What was there in the supposed Dark Ages that threatened the extinction of the human species compared to the apparent ability for human pressure today to burst the support capacity of the Planet? We did not learn how to control Mother Nature to save ourselves, weve merely succeeded in refining our ability to insult Her to the point where She may react on a grand scale. The monumental hubris in view of some Glorious Utopianism which rests on the gilded Throne of Modern Science has blinded you Sully into not being able to see that Modern Man has in fact DEGENERATED into the present obvious state of miserable and near-suicidal affairs. Too much use and reliance upon rationality and reason makes us infernal and cyclically stupid, that is, the Intellect of the Middle Age Cosmological formulations of the view of the World, of the Greater World, of the Origin and End of the world in which we find ourselves has been jettisoned by modern Enlightened Man who thinks his own mere brain is sufficient to carry on whatever Path was set before Mankind, he being the WASP lucky enough to be the torch bearer of Vain Modernisms stupendous breakthrough. As for Christianitys greatest nemesis, there is such a thing as Eastern Intellectuality, dormant in the overrun Muslim lands for some centuries, which may very well have a say in the entire spectrum of Mans near-future affairs. After all, 60% of the Quran concerns visible Nature, whether it be water, soil, earth, mountain, valley, desert, streams, sand, storms, wind or the Heavenly Bodies of the celestial ramparts.
F$#%$%CK THAT. It WILL shift the orbit... and i can tell u how I know. Granted the moon is moving away from Earth at I believe 3 miles per year. Or maybe 3 ft. Either way, I saw a special on this asteroid that is supposed to possibly collide with earth in 2010. Or it has to hit that keyhole and then NASA will know if it will hit earth or just fly by. But they discussed that if they hit the asteroid with a small highly dense object at approximately the speed of a bullet. It will alter the asteroid's orbit enough to miss hitting earth. Funny thing is, if the moons orbit is changed it will not have the PERFECT BALANCE THAT it does today. It is amazing how it rotates exactly in such a way that the same side always faces us and causes our waves and in turn our wind. Hitting it could cause typhoons, hurricanes, death destruction etc... depends on how lucky the new world order "Elite" are. But if i know anything, (which i don't) the almighty creator will fix everything, either that or try something new. We'll hafta see.

HAHAHA I have read so many paranoia claims of moon distruction and bombing, orbit shattering, moon life bombing, tax payer waste of money, America "BOMBING" the moon, the moon controls our tides why bomb it, the moon is hollow.
For any of you all that is frightened that this is going to mean or do anything other than progress humanity is very VERY foolish and VERY VERY small minded. I mean real small minded. If you really feel scared or bothered then you all will never EVER get the full effects this planet or humanity can offer you. I am sorry but most of you posting here are very pitiful indeed. I really feel sad that so many can be so narrow minded and still live a fruitful exsistance here on earth.
I am ashamed to be human only in this aspect. How did we all evolve this far with so many stupid people here thinking we are going to harm anything with this experiment.
OMG people! I am no where near the brightest person on this planet and I know for a fact this is going to be another step into human evolution WITHOUT HARMING ANYONE OR ANYTHING. not even our tax budget. I payed for this moon mission too.
There is a huge life out here for all those people who are undereducated and mindless
Is it not enough that our earth is in serious trouble with all the digging and blasting and devastation....now the moon...and they say it's about water...crap...are we going to believe more lies....it's all about MONEY again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Melting into the ocean from global warming. Why is it some
of you people can be such haters? Throwing insults at other's
opinions. Those that call names and make judgements are
truly the ones that are uneducated & uninformed. I'm not a
scientist, maybe there is no risk here. But do we know that for
sure? Why not just send a probe there to explore and look
for water. That, to me would seem more logical and conclusive.
Dear Godfathers, the Grandmothers do not give you permission to bomb our moon. Your ignorant pride is gobsmacking, Once again stupid curiousity is about to blast past all sense and knowledge of where your military daftness has led us upon Earth does not encourage confidence in your further invasion of our Heavens. May your bomb fizzle out before it reaches your target and good sense strike you all without warning. Love Lilian
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisOh my Lord, please forgive these scientist for what they are about to do. As I read in one of the other comments, please let the moon just do it's job God intended it to do. By bombing or exploding it just to satisfy your curiousity if there is any existing water, might delete out what God gave to us, the moon! Well, it's kind of late, tomorrow is the 8th of October, God please protect us for what they have done.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisI'm uneducated and uninformed? Have you read anything about LCROSS? (rhetorical question, of course you haven't) First of all, it's NOT A BOMB. It's an impactor. A rocket, 1/8 the size of some of the Apollo stuff that has hit the moon, shot into the floor of a crater. A 30-06 bullet has a muzzle velocity of 2910 ft/s, which translates to .887 km/s. The impactor is twice that fast, which equals 1.77 km/s, has a mass of 2305kg, the same as a loaded-to-the-max Audi A6, and will make a crater about 2o METERS wide. Meteor Crater in Arizona is estimated to have been caused by a 50-meter-wide iron-rich meteor weighing 100,000 tons striking the desert at more than 11 kilometers per second. Meteor Crater is ONLY 1.1 km wide. Cabeus, NASA's target, is 98 km wide! If whatever huge object that made Cabeus in first place didn't knock the Moon out of its orbit, this little chunk of metal certainly won't. Secondly, NASA is not the military. Thirdly, the Moon is not made of green cheese, hollow, or full of Moon Men. And lastly, global warming is a hoax with an agenda, as even its most rabid spokesmen admit!

Also, can someone PLEASE tell me why every other country makes this about "American Hubris" or what have you? I will be the first to say as a very proud American woman that, yes The United States has displayed hubris on many occasions but, honestly this is ridiculous. This is not about our hubris or thinking we run the entire world. Or some misguided thought that our President is a God, or anything like that. Also, this does not violate the UN Outer Space Treaty. I read it. This is not a declaration of war is falls under the realm of Scientific Exploration.

LOL the thing I really like the most about all these postings is how much it shows people stupidity and awareness about the world around them when they claim that this "BOMB" haha is going to knock the moon off its current OR FUTURE trajectory or axis. LMAO
Right now, if every man, or beast on this planet could put together a bomb, all working together, (if we all work together then Yes we will even go with some ragheads ideas and throw a couple of suicide bombers in there too(idiots)) The biggest bomb we could ever produce to date, then we would barely be able to see the dust plume on the moon through a telescope. We couldn't even match one of the medium size craters on the moon with this bomb.
And still people cry, "Don't hit the moon with a bomb, it controls our tides." This is for those people "the worst thing that could happen from this is we might accidently hit one of the wires that powers the moons light"
So What!!!! We could see the stars better without that stupid thing in our eyes
These people have more money than sense, and way too much time on their hands....How much is it going to cost to send a rocket in to space then orbit the earth a couple times before they blow a hole in the moon, A HOLE IN THE MOON....come on now people...what are they hopeing to find some form of life that we have never before seen....no people their lookin to see if the moon has any water inside it....that's it pure H2O

the majority of the people here are letting there imaginations run away with them..just because its going to be powerful enough to produce visable debris does not mean its going to do radical damage or take out a country. Some may see it as a waste but i wonder what people thought about investing in medical research. Just because you fail to see the reason or dont care doent mean its not important, they didnt just sit at a table and say," hey lets blow the moon up for shits and giggles." they have research and reason to want to know if, and where there could be water in our universe, i mean it is one of those thing living beings HAVE to have to survive. It could find probable cause for other life, and no im not talking about little green men with big buggy eyes that fly around in little discs. SCIENCE IS IMPORTANT..no matter if you find it boring or just dont care or understand, and part of science is exploring, and understanding.

Quite honestly I think they are complete idiots at this point. This may sound like a contradiction but I know, yes, they are scientists and what not and I am not a scientist but, out of prior knowledge from taking science courses this could be deadly to the earth....If they remove too much debris who knows what could happen, the moon's orbit could be thrown off, throwing the earth's orbit off or causing the moon to be hurtled into the earth, or even visa versa. The earth could go hurtling into the sun, extreme environment changes, flooding or anything really...Well this proves the point that humans will be the death of themselves...

Since when it bombing not a declaration of war? I cannot fathom the thought of being bombed and not feel it is an act of violence. Are they looking for water? Why? We have water right here on Earth that needs to be taken care of&in fact our Environment needs lots of help and that money should be used to ensure it will be healthy for our future generations. Or, is there another reason they are going to bomb the Moon&makes one wonder. I read an article in the Astronomy Magazine, October 2009, page 16. This article was written by Bob Berman under Strange Universe. It is written as follows&The Moon rings like an enormous gong. When unneeded spacecraft are sent crashing onto the lunar surface, the Moon still shakes 2 hours later. By contrast, impacts on Earth dampen out in just a minute or two. Explanation: The Moon must have a solid core like a giant crystal that transmits vibrations, unlike Earth with its liquidy creamy nougat center. If a simple space crash can cause the Moon to shake for two hours&what damage will a bomb do?

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThis is a science fiction nightmare!!! Now, I'm not opposed of science's ambition to build a space station for further study, and I'm not even opposed of science's curiosity to find water on the moon, but launching a missile to blow a hole in the moon just for water is criminal! There are better, more creative, ways science can accomplish this, but frankly, NASA is acting RETARDED! We've already destroyed the earth, let's not destroy the moon! Even if there is water on the moon, there is no way it would be of any use on that wasteland. And transporting water from the moon to the earth would cost BILLIONS of dollars the global market does not have. If we want water so bad, let's conserve what we already have. The mega wealthy would sit up in their moon houses and nuke the planet Earth like a video game and laugh.
with all the respect for all the coments i just need to ask: bombing the moon in the name of science..but for what? i think that is the main idea behind the supposed harmless of bombing the moon that is dangerous..to put there a manned moonbase.. you can say that the moon is bombarded with random chunks of rock for billions of years and so, comparing with this human act, the impact now wont be nothing.. why do they want to know if there is water on the moon??whats behind it??just curiosity?is it just science for science?or is it ego and fear?or all together..what you are so afraid of?of not having enough water on our beloved planet?and then how will you be rich?and have the control?of being homeless when your own house is destroid (by you..)? maybe you can start solving the problem taking (much) more care about your/our real Home..instead of jumping from sphere to sphere..Nasa and USA governement (not the people!): disregard your ego (superman is just a cartoon..) and dont be so afraid of life!!just respect it more!Ah! and maybe there is life on the moon!maybe you just cant see it..or..is not allowed to be shown to you..you wouldnt have inteligence enough to understand!(sorry about my english..im not an anglo-saxonic native speaker).Dont be so afraid of loving!!Start to love and you wont be so afraid, so needed of control, power..because in the end its just an ilusion..you dont have it!start to travel more inside of you..not outside seeking for power. let there be light in your heart!*

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisHi, I think this is really stupid! I'm not a scientist either but won't this effect the moon's orbit which will inturn effect us? Doesn't the moon's gravitational pull effect our oceans? So... mess with the moon and we'll have a Tsunami? So what's going to happen with all the debris from the explosion? What if it comes shooting towards Earth? Then what? Thanks Nasa glad my hard earned dollars are going to satisfy your curisoity and not my medical expenses! You're the best!

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisLet me just say, if people lived and worked on the moon what could they find out that they couldn't have known for all these decades that we have been going to the moon (chuckle)?
Why don't they just put people on the moon and have them drill for water, or use one of those giant sampling tubes? Why use a creator maker (or whatever silly word you want to use to try to explain a missile without using that term)? Maybe they would have to spend some time there building launching gear to get the shuttle back to Earth, oh wait.. umm... LOL! Didn't mean to spill the beans, sorry NASA.
It's about as Genius as "curing" cancer with mustard gas!

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisI'm sorry I can't tell if you're English is really weak, or if you're just illiterate. Actually reading the article will tell you that most of the research was done by British scientists. They're only teaming with NASA because they have a lot more funding and it's beneficial to everyone. While I by no means agree with the war started by George W Bush, no one, by any means can accuse America of being bored with killing humans and wanting to "kill the space". I don't need to go into detail over the erroneous word choice and logic used.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisNow onto my thoughts... While I think that its very dangerous for solutions to resource shortages to be solved by space colonization, I liked star trek and maybe that's where we're headed. I trust that these scientist will know how to not fuck up the moon.
Who gave permission to bomb the moon? Real scientists in the world we know understand the Principle of the Sacred Balance.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThen there are those who just do things to satisfy their inane curiosity with no real consideration for effects of their actions.
The definition for these members of our society is the same as the medical definition of A VIRUS. I am not trying to be nasty just alarmed at the blatant lack of wisdom and real consideration for the essentials of life in our universe. When you do something which could potentially change the specific relationships of heavenly bodies saying I'm sorry i didn't think of that DOESN'T CUT IT. It has been stated the earth has a 23.25 degree relationship with the sun and if that changes we are doomed; Thank God for all the water we have to balance otherwise taking too much oil out of one side of the earth or the pole areas would do us in.
So what if you change the orbital relationship between the moon and the earth. In the far east they have a saying much quoted - "Pluck a flower and disturb a star." - there is some application for that thought here. Here's hoping we wake up breathing tomorrow. Disclaimer: "I may disagree with what YOU SAY but will always honor your right to say it."

How retarted do they think we are???? Come on, they are not bombing the moon for water, they are testing a new bomb!!! I suspect they have a new bomb comparrable to a nuclear bomb, and they want to test to see how it performs and this is there pathtetic attempt at making it seem they are doing something else. Got to love the U.S.A, nothing but lies.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisSounds like NASA doesn't understand the law if physics. You know, where every action has an equal and opposite reaction. What a joke! I heard this was Arnold Schwarzenegger's idea. How appropriate.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisOkay, this is just a unknowledgeable idea. No one is really thinking and they're just panicing, thats why the scientists are just jumping to solutions to avoid the decreasing supply of water on Earth. But they're clearly missing the important facts; that a missile being shot at the moon, considering the size and speed of this missile, can possibly shift the orbit of the moon; if it doesn't shatter the moon first it may shift further to the Earth, causing it's gravitational pull to become stronger and making the moon crush the Earth or ruin its' atmosphere in the result of the impact. If the Moon moves away from the earth, it could possibly mess with the Earth's orbit or sling shot the moon around the sun and hit another planet, causing choas across our galaxy. God set up the galaxy the way he did for a reason. This mission of chasing overthought dreams is not only filled with lots of doubts and unseen consequences, but could possibly be one of the largest mistakes of the human race. Is knowing whether there is water on the moon really worth all this?

I am all for scientific advancement and while it is probably highly unlikely that all life of earth will perish from this one act, I do think you are not considering the long term consequences of your actions to the moon. Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisHey guys, you should learn a little science before you start judging NASA's decisions. Determining if there is water on the moon is a valuable endeavor for a multitude of potentially practical reasons (such as being a potential water resource for scientists spending prolonged periods of time on the moon, for example) as well as being a worthwhile basic science question. Probably the logic behind using explosives is that it is a much less expensive and much less dangerous method than sending scientists to the moon to study the geology by hand. And no, an explosive device of this kind will not impart sufficient momentum upon the moon to alter its orbit.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisOf course, the criticism that this is prompted by a desire to develop satellite-to-earth missile systems is potentially a valid one worth discussing. But the tones I see in the above posts are much more sophomoric than that, and don't seem to be addressing that issue in a serious manner.
p.s. - what exactly does it mean to 'wage war on space'? I can't wait to get to my physics class to tell my friends that someone thinks it's meaningful to 'wage war on space'. lol. Perhaps you meant 'wage war in space'?

Ok patrick_kenn, just read your comment and had to respond about the things NASA has done. I am impressed at the level of complexity with which NASA operates. However, when if comes to choices between what the country and the world needs verses NASA. . . . NASA takes a back seat. Space exploration is NOT going to save the world from its problems. The countries priorities are out of place with what is needed and NASA draws off valuable resources which could be put to better use. Let the people sound off as much as they want. These comments are great. Besides, their not listen to us anyway.

Why is it so much necessary to find water on moon when there is plenty on earth. We should learn and find ways to manage our natural resources to the fullest capacity first. Our eco-systems are self-sustainable if we manage them in a proper way and the amount of water we have here can cover the whole land mass of earth. IT IS AN UTTER STUPIDITY ON THE PART OF GOVERNMENTS AND CITIZENS ALIKE THAT WATER MANAGEMENT IS ALWAYS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE NATIONAL PRIORITY LIST WATER LIFE-SUSTAINING NATURAL SUBSTANCE ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY BOTH IN HELL AND HEAVEN . If we manage the available water well, we dont need to find water elsewhere for many thousand years to come. With our progressive way of life we have damaged our pristine natural water system and now we are trying to do our best to start a systematic damage to the moon. I hope when NASA fires a bomb into moon, someone or something or aliens would FIRE back and destroy all the equipments, reminding us to mind and manage the resources made available to us well first before going into some other frontiers to do our damaging works. Most of the fellas at NASA are scientists or you can say as, "WEIRD SCIENTIFIC FREAKS WHO LIKE FIREWORKS SHOWS AND TRICKS", who don't care much about the plight of the common people of our world. The time, energy, effort, money, etc. used for this purpose can instead be better utilized to manage our available water resources right under our feet!!!!

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisAnd by the way this has nothing to do with getting more water for earth. They stated that they could use it to support a manned moon base. The water on earth isnt going anywhere, it is continually recycling.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisi think that this whole thing is bull$h!t. the people at nasa are idiots. they're risking all of the people on earth's lifes just for that shit. i'll be sure to be up in the morning to watch the earth die...
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisWe're not going to war with the moon. That's just ridiculous. I don't know if the impact could possibly be great enough to throw it off its orbit. The moon has probably handled bigger and harder impacts in the billions of years its been up there. Plus I'm confident that the astrophysicists at NASA have taken the power of impact into consideration. Space exploration and a moon base... sounds like crazy sci-fi stuff to me, exploring new frontiers and expanding our knowledge of the the universe makes me think of Star Trek and Star Wars so I must admit it sounds pretty exciting to me, though also extremely expensive. =(
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisLeave nature alone!! Let it do it's thing. I totally despise this mission to bomb the moon. And believe NASA does not have the right to do it. The whole Earth shares the moon. If they want to carry out such an invasive endeavor, they better consult the other nations too. Man has already marred Earth. What do you get if you know there's water on the moon? Save the remaining water on Earth.....
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThat's ridiculous, Heracles. We all know that the astro-physicists at NASA have no idea how to tell what kind of impact would affect the moons orbit and that the moon has never been struck by other celestial objects traveling at high speeds through frictionless space.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisI guess progress is darn expensive, but omg MOON BASE! Exploring new frontiers and making sci-fi happen is a pretty amazing feat that seems greater than our earthly problems... which I guess are pretty significant, especially in terms of our economy. =(

This is crazy and truly unethical and should not be allowed to happen. Its bad enough we bomb each other, lets leave the rest of the world(s) out of it. Water was already discovered by Indias mission several years ago. And remember folks that NASA (and most major news media outlets) are linked to the NSA, CIA, DoD and Army/Air Force/ Navy Intelligence. Anything they try to explain or try to debunk (aka: disinformation) to the public you can be assured it is all BS.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisyou know, it seems to me that this may be a last ditch effort to save the polar ice caps and maybe us... not sure how sound of an idea it is but in my crazy mixed up mind I see it as such: If we4 blast the moon and a we find water, we can colonize the moon in an effort to complete opperation constelation or whatever it's called. However if we find that in fact there is not water on the moon, at least we can shift the moons position enough to couteract the shifted tilt of the earths axis and the drifting that earth has done from the from the sun... just a theory by an average Joe using what he likes to call reason.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisseriously? 79 million to look for water on the moon? What a sad and terrible thing to do! I'm disappointed that NASA is so desperate to get attention for future funding. The moon is of vital importance to our planet's survival and bombing it can throw things off course. Think about it, how would the Earth respond if a vessel crashed into it? NASA is run by individuals not thinking through the consequences of their actions. Protect the moon!

Ca you predict with 100% certainty what the effect of you actions would be. If not leave it the fuck alone.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisI understand the concept of going to the moon to look for water to support a moon base. If it is going to be a such a deep crater from the impact this seems to be a matter of economics. I know it could take a long time to drill a hole that deep, it does on earth. Which could cost a lot. But, from drilling you at least understand the strata and will know how deep the water is. You won't be able to tell that from this expensive experiment. You will probably say, yep there is water, now we need billions more to drill a hole to see where the heck it is. I guess this is a scientific stimulus package of maga proportions. The only need for a base moon station to to train astronauts to be ready for extended space flights to god knows where. We may be running out of time on our planet, they just aren't telling us that they have spoken directly to god. And, he says time is nearing the end and if you want to live get off the planet...I don't think so. God will be ready at any given moment to end it. Just think super valcanoes and massive siesmic activity near those regions. Something may errupt at anytime and end the world with in hours. So run up your credit card debt and have a blast, take a cruise, travel the world over. Have fun, it may all be over any day anyways. That will simulate the economy too, until you can't pay what you owe. What a circle we live in, the world.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisShoot, I think the report said the rocket is not really a bomb, just some other thing , supposed to act like a comet and its going to make an impact of 70-60 feet? I mean thats the only way it will be safe. Like if somebody did the same thing in reverse but to like the desert i think it would only make a small crater in it. Secondly is the axis of the moon affect the earth? or is it the sun that its actually being revolved around? Yes and that would be a disastor if the earth changed shift then all kinds wierd stuff could happen. Finally have they not spent enough money to save a thrid world country to see if the moon had water and all the test came out the same, either it had little frozen water, or something.

The attempt to bomb moon is the height of human ignorance. Our material quest of nature without understanding the Truth of Nature has already rendered earth and cosmos unstable. If you stand back and observe, we note that the natural catastrophes have both increased in number and magnitude in parallel to explosion of material knowledge and material exploitation. It could be suicidal to stress nature without first understanding the Truth of Nature, its interrelationship, oneness and its working. I write this comment as a scientist who worked in the field of biotechnology and set out seek Truth of Nature. If the Moon were somehow destroyed it would effect the entire gravitation balance of the earth to everything and we would all die. Ok, if this is wrong call me stupid. Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisI can't believe it really happened. It is insane, stupid and desperate. What's the matter with you people??
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisEveryone seems to be posting really stupid comments here. A 5Ton bomb can't throw the moon off its orbit. Much more massive explosions have happened on Earth and we're still here. They are doing so that they don't have to waste money transporting water to the moon when they build a base there. By the way, a lot of you really need to invest in a dictionary.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisi really do not know why we are
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisI really don't believe that we should be launching bombs or what not at the moon when it can take it off the orbit and mess everything up. I believe that we should come up with a better plan then to not just shoot things twice as fast as bullets into the moon.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thiswell, i for one vote yay.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thismilitary action has caused so many advances in human technology. and please let someone try to argue against that, i need a good laugh.
i don't see how you can possibly say that space exploration is a waste of money!! so you don't want to consider the possibility of finding other life forms? you don't want to find another planet that can be inhabited? a waste of taxpayer's money? please....welfare, congress' annual pay raises, amnesty AND unemployment checks for ILLEGAL aliens, this health reform bullshit....those are wasteful programs, but to say that NASA is?? how does that make sense? have you licked a 9V battery today? i recommend doing so if not, maybe it'll jumpstart that lump of gray matter you like to call your brain. without NASA you wouldn't have cellular phones, you wouldn't have fiber optics, space travel would be a myth still, digital tv, yep you can kiss that goodbye too! scientists wouldn't have the understanding of life, HERE on earth, that they have today. notice how i said scientists because i'm willing to bet not a single one of you can tell me just what else is causing global warming, and sorry, pollution is only a small part.
the amount of force needed to move the moon....would be MASSIVE compared to any and all explosive materials we have on earth. oh and i want to ask this....how many of you that have replied to this posting are rocket scientists?? how many of you can tell me what a lagrangian point is? i think i've made my point very clear....sssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh. if you don't know what you're talking about, go read a book instead of watching the next american idol, or football game, or playing the newest patch for world of warcraft....and please for humanities sake....don't reproduce.
Mane these doods is stupid!!!
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisWhy do news outlets insist on calling this "bombing"? It's ludicrous. LCROSS is not a bomb! It's nonexplosive and nonmilitary. And it's one thing for the local news to say that we're "bombing" the moon, it's another for a publication that should know better. Using military terminology like "bomb" and "missile" totally distorts the conversation about what NASA is actually doing and what their goals are. Try to report the news accurately instead of sensationalizing it.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisIt's preatty interesting! The moon is hit by space material sevral times per day. And in the past there has been massive meteor impacts... so a missile is not gonna hurt nobody. I hope they find water, cause that is a well expensive mission, to send water to the moon...
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to this@kocol - don't worry about Monn's shifting orbiter... in the 50's there was a plan in order to destroy the moon, because it's orbit is responsable for many weather effects on earth. Fortunatly someone was smart enough to understand that the debris would had fallen on earth...
there is no danger for an orbiter shifting of the moon... the satellite id hitten every day by space debris, wich creates more pwerful impacts than the one made by a missile... we can't see em, because it happens on the dark side of the moon.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisI hope the mission will be successful, cause sending water up there is going to be very expensive
Can we spend more money??? Are you people RETARDED??? if GOD didn't want the moon to be where and how it is, HE would have changed it, Boy, Man can not leave well enough alone...
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisWTF????? Can we spend anymore money?? If GOD didn't want the moon to be where or how it is, He would have changed it, NOT MAN!!!! Really?? Can man honestly destroy any thing else?? This really sickens me...Lets give it up one more time for the GOVERNMENT!!
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisWhy the heck would want to bomb the moon? Does anyone not care what that could possibly mean for the planet earth? What happens if something goes wrong with this plan to "bomb the moon". We could be tremendously effected by this. Well, I guess this just furthers my proof that scientists know no bourndaries. They have no limits in their minds, I suppose.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisLunatic refers to irratic behavior during the full moon phase. Gravitaional effects (if they truly exist) of the moon would be most powerful when the moon was closest to the Earth (perigee), which is independent of it phases ie; the moon can be full when it is at its furthest point from the Earth (apogee), so the "lunatic" explanation is illogical. I so love having my "Sheldon Cooper" moments-lol!
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisYou dumb ass.. haha if god thought we could mess earth up or the moon he wouldn't have invented man.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisYour all idiots!
omg i cant believe your blowing up the moon, thats so killer haha lolz <3
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThe satellite that will be performing this impact will be about the size of a jet aircraft. Yet rocks that are MILES across hit the moon every day going faster than this vehicle will be traveling, and they don't fuck the moon up. There will not be an "explosion" just a cloud of debris which will hopefully include frozen water. The water will not evaporate as there will be no heat, and the trailing satellite will easily be able to identify it. There is ABSOLUTELY no possibility of any change to the moon from this mission, and hopefully we will find water there which a hopefully future mission to put a permanent base on the moon will be able to make use of. You guys are all fucking retarded (except the ones who take time to post intelligent remarks based off scientific reason and not idiocy).
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisShoot the moon has a whole new connotation. What the h... were they thinking? Apparently, NASA has a blank check. Wouldn't it have been cheaper to send up Joe the Plumber, let him drill a well and bring the space ship back?
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisAlso, the word "Bomb" in the title of article is a poor choice of words. A lot of people don't take the time to read the article and merely look at the title, and we're giving them the wrong impression of the mission.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisOh and, I've been sick didn't look at the date....The mission was already carried out. Earth is still here you fuck-tards, absolutely nothing happened except a plume of debris was released and we are now analyzing it for evidence of water.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisBut you are wrong when you say that "(T)he attack on the Moon is not a declaration of war or act of wanton vandalism." That is exactly what it is, regardless of the "noble" goal you want to ascribe to the bombing.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisSadly, ironically, this coincided with Obama's being awarded the Nobel Peace prize. NASA has taken taken human disfunctionality outside the earth's atmosphere. Apparently it is not enough that we have mistakenly come to see ourselves as outside of nature on our home planet where we are leaving a garbage dump in our wake, we now intend to take our waywardness outside our biosphere and into other realms we penetrate. Very, very sad and disturbing, indeed.
Wow. Space exploration is one thing, but - bombing the moon? Insane.

First of all that is great idea!
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisWHY?
Because we need to know if there is water on the Moon if we want to build Moon station.
Why we want to build moon station?
How many people live on Earth today? About 7,8 billion and increasing almost exponentially. One day there will be no place to live on Earth. Space is are only option. We should start making preparations as soon as possible which is exactly what NASA is doing. Having water on Moon will only make it easier.
Moon shift it's orbit without are interference and has done that for hundred thousands of years. But this will not change Moon's orbit, that is absurd.
A little high school physics can prove my point. Find the Newtons laws and calculate the force needed to use to move the moon. So we better think about how much carbon dioxide we set loose when we drove to work today.
Science is are damnation but t is also our salvation!

And if there is water some of it will probably evaporate, but that would mean that there is frozen water probably under the moon surface in other places on Moon.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisHow can someone of mature mind and responsible enough even think of such things as bombing the moon or any other planet that are in our system. It is all interconnected! The moon and the sun have such a vital for the Earth meaning/presence. It affects not only our low/high tides, it affects our moods as well (at least some people who can feel/see the effect) etc etc... Why do people - science - not think about what risk they put on the whole creation. We do inhibit the Mother Earth too. Why do you cherish your own ideas without thinking of responsibility before each single part of universe! How dare you risk the lives of billions, the life of the whole creation and bomb such an important things for living! At the end you are not just destroying yourselves and local place you live by, but you are destroying slowly every single aspect of being... What happened with human kinds? Why do we keep destroying what was given us to be happy and live peacefully? Had we turned to be robots who don't think with their hearts any more, don't think of all consequences that might happen? Why don't we think of a life and everything around us as a gift? Why can't people accept it as is (it has worked for centuries, ages!) and start loving and cherish it as WE ARE part of it! WE ARE all (planets; plants; animals; humans; and every single creature that inhibits the planet) interconnected. It is simple and not! But please scientists don't be selfish pursuing your ideas! Think of every single part of this universe and think what if my scientific idea will cost billions of life or slow destruction of the planet!!! How would you feel to see the result of your own destruction???? I hope this message come across to your (science) heart!

I don't think bombing the moon is a good idea since if the moon shifts from its orbital position eclipse wouldn't exist anymore since using an atomic bomb is much stronger weapon than an asteroid falling every month on moon, If that is not to be believed then my question is what is the sense of knowing that there is a water on moon? since ok for knowledge its not like earth is going to run out of water specially when global warming starts infact it adds more water on its self. and if ever earth is dying and we all need a new planet no no ones gonna get out of this planet be it! since we are the one contributes and making cause of our own disaster so we will face the consequence all together, And how could we live on moon let's say it has water can nasa make a huge spaceship to ship all of us there or only the rich people? Do you think we could breath in there without oxygen and there is no gravity in there and one thing nasa itself stated that moon is being hit by asteroid every once a month so it means it is still not safe to live in there, you know what NASA is trying to be way too smart but because they are too smart they lose the common thinking like an innocent people thinks which makes innocent people appears smarter, And i do believe that this will be one reason to start the beginning of the next human generation and end our generation since this proves we are making mistakes more than chances we take,

how stupid is our goverment anyways? its not bad enuff that we pollute earth with bombing the planet but some people thinks its a great to bomb the moon gee lets try and blow up the moon no more sheild to protect us from space debrie so its just a little bomb what really is the inner layers of the moon made of have u done test drilling to make sure thereisn,t some kind of compound that may have an adverse reaction to said bomb i can remember in our past nasa doing some preety dumb things. opps i got caught thinking again
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thiscurtis, contrary to the urban legend, Tang was not invented/created/ or discovered in Space : )
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisSoooo.... Let me get this straight. They [meaning the government and NASA] thought it would be smart to bomb the moon. So they wish to find water... ?? WHY ARENT THEY TRYING TO HELP CLEAN UP THE PLANET WITH THE REST OF US!?!!! So what if something went wrong... we are all made up of water. The moon moves tides and so forth... which assuming this theory to be true... wouldn't that mean we as a human race are effected by the moon as well??? Thanks NASA for being so freaking smart I'm glad they learned you all well!

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisOMFG! You people seriously think one bomb hitting the moon is going to cause some sort of monumental damage? For millions of years it has endured, yet you think we have the power to take it down!?! Don't get me wrong... I think its a big fat waste of money, but come on, do you seriously believe the bleeding heart crap about us "hurting" the moon? And read the article ... they aren't looking for new water sources to replace the ones on earth; they are trying to locate a water source so they can build a base near it (which, again, is a big fat waste of money). An we are not going to war with the moon either ... unless you consider blast mining war... which means that many a coal company is at war with the USA right now...

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisIn my opinion I feel this wasn't a good thing. You have to think of all the possibilities that could have happened, what if the missile broke off a large portion of the moon? Then what if it came down colliding into Earth. Sometimes its better to just leave mother nature alone. we already can't keep up our planet so why destroy something thats not ours, I understand having the need to want to make new friends but why make new friends if your going to kill or slave them. thats what we do to our selves and each other. "scientist and NASA is something else, ill tell ya"
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisIt's to the point now where I need to get my life right with GOD because the way NASA is going I don't think I'm going to be around long and I don't feel safe living on this planet knowing that that boombs and holes are being shot in the moon. Whats next finding life on the sun? :(
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisIt's crazy how NASA is trying to find life on other planets but they cant do anything about the pole melting on Earth thats causing Global Warming. What are the going to do next sale some of Earth's resources to other living creatures , aliens.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisWow. I'm astounded by the stupidity of people in these comments.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThe moon looks small from your backyard, yes. That's because it's 400,000+ miles away. It's really a very, very large object. I highly doubt there's anything humans could do to it with present technology to cause it to explode, or crash into earth, or go flying away, or whatever. Meteors with more mass than the spacecraft in question have crashed into the moon millions of times, and guess what? It's still there.
The majority of people who commented here are a demonstration of the need for more mandatory science education.
This makes me so sad. What a horrible thing to do. Haven't we done enough damage to the Earth now we have to start in on the moon.???
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisi agree with you completely
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisWhy in the heck would NASA even think about doing something like that?!?!?! Only a complete idiot would think of something so stupid! By launching a bomb of that kind of power, would create immense amounts of heat, evaporating all water, if there even is water on the moon, in this case, bombing the moon is pointless!
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisSTARLINAOCEAN, that is so true! And if there was water on the moon, the bomb would create heat and evaporate all of the water! So if they are really going to be that stupid, they should send someone up there to drill!
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThat's true, if u want to get ur life right with God then start with a prayer, it's easy, u just tell God that ur sorry for all of the bad things that you've done and u ask him to come into ur life and help u. U don't have to talk out loud, u can whisper or just think it, it doesn't matter, God always hears u. And God loves u, he created u. The Bible will explain everything. The Bible is God's book, It is a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eye witnesses that report supernatural events which took place in the fulfillment of specific prophecies and claim to be divine rather than human in origin. If that is hard to understand, then I'll tell u what it means, it means that the Bible is a book filled with documents that the people wrote that live lived years ago, when Jesus (Jesus is God's son) walked on earth, these documents are all true stories! If u don't own a Bible, then u can find them at ur nearest book store. Just remember, when u are facing hard times, and it seams like life's just not worth living, remember this verse from the bible, For God has said, "I will never fail u nor forsake u" Hebrews 13:3. That verse means a lot to me, I face hard times a lot. Remember that u are gods creation and he loves u. If u have any questions, then reply to this message and i'll help u.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThis is truly terrible news. I am so sorry this happened, I hope to God that my tax dollars did not go to fund this atrocity.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisWhat does it say about humanity that we're not content to simply destroy our planet but also bomb our moon with a view to using up any water resources there too? Shouldn't we be looking at ourselves and finding ways to harmonise with our universe instead? Even if there is water on the moon it is a non-renewable source. What a destructive and selfish race we humans are turning into. There's so much potential in humanity that we just don't even care about it would be a shame if all we managed to do after 10,000 years of civilisation was to destroy ourselves.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThis is by far the dumbest f'ing thing I've ever read in my life. it's not enough that we are destroying our world....let's screw around with the moon. I mean really which idiot thought this would be a good idea and what other idiot approved an idea made under the influence. How dare you use my tax money for this type of stupidity!!!!! I'm boycotting everything NASA. if this stupidity continues, I'm no longer going to pay taxes.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisNever mind that your argument is ridiculous. Don't you think we can spend tax dollars on something more productive and less destructive. If you'd like to argue from a scientific point of view argue the benefits of this experiment.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisgood luck to bomb the moon, nasa is meant to house the smartest people ever.... are they really that stupid as to bomb the moon for 'scientific purposes' its the stupidest idea I have ever seen, is this all you people do, sit around looking for ways to make the public go WTF!?!?!?!?!
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisI protest! Don't use MY tax dollars to fund this effort! Tax dollars aside, this is ludicrous. Send a probe, do it peacefully, but if the subtle balance within and outside our Moon is disturbed, I will personally visit the perpetrators in the afterlife.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisCan an astrophysicst or astronomer, geoscientist relate the bombing of the moon to the numerous earthquakes and volcanoes occurring on earth including the displacement of the earth from its axis in the Haiti 7.8 magnitude Richter scale earthquake? I think the increased incidence of these phenomena may have something to do with the bombing as it may has disturbed the centripetal and centrifugal forces of attraction and repulsion between the earth and other heavenly bodies. Can anybody establish some mathematical linkages? And if the linkage is true do we not have to bomb again from the other side to restore the balance after which nobody should bomb again?
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisi dont think its the moon being bomed is what we should worry about so much i dont think that nasa would send a missile to the moon if they thought it would be a danger to the world, but the real truth behind why they r doing it is what boggles me, with all the earthquakes and everything i wonder if the real reason for finding water on the moon is us to get off this damn planet because boming the moon seems like a desperate atempt for somthing..somthing that only nasa and the goverment really know, and by the time we find out whats really gong on with is whole boming the moon crap it will be to late for us to debate about if it was stupid, wrong, rite, useless,or helpfull or mabey our savior to mankind!! but im getting carried away just a thought no one really mentioned yet....
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThe mission as a whole was illogical to begin with. Anyone with a brain would see that if the space rocks that often hit the moon are observed to have water, the moon, also, would have water. It would have cost the same to just start mining for it.

Now you want to take out the moon. You will suffer the consequences. The moon sustains the oceans, provides light at night and besides its gods creation. Oh by tghe way you don't beleive in god your scientist who think they know everyhting. What on earth is wrong with you people?
What on earth is wrong with you people? Literally.

Oh by the way you scientists are just a bunch of ignorant stuck up curious cats. And you know what happened to the cat right?
You don't know nothing when it comes to our creator.
You will see the wrath of God and suffer the consequences.
Go ahead bomb it and you will regret the day you were born.
hey pal we never started talkin shit about you soo dont talk shit about america i bet you cant even win a war you fucking douchebag!

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisGo NASA. Just heard about this one this morning. Awesome idea in my book. I love reading the posts of the ignorant uneducated masses. Most don't realize that many of our best options for solving world hunger, and a good number of our other problems here on Earth, are with the research done at NASA. Research done in Zero-G, and many of the polymers and materials widely used today come as a result of NASA research.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisSo stop your griping there, and to say that a small rocket is going to throw off the moons orbit or blow it up is ridiculous. The Bomb used was barely a fraction of the size of the A-bombs used on Nagasaki or Hiroshima. Using the same reasoning obviously those bombs should have knocked us out of our orbit or for that matter blown the Earth apart. It's comparitive to us shooting the moon with a BB gun.
Let's show some Intelligence here people, as well as at least a marginal lack of mass hysteria hyper-paranoia about the government. If you're American and have issues with the Government, get educated in politics, educate your neighbor, and get something done, don't sit around griping about it like some junior high brat.
Back on subject....Hope we find water up there, would be tight to get myself some real estate with an Earth view....
You are an IDIOT!

I do not believe in aliens. But according to this story NASA and US-Government believe. Only a REAL FEAR of future alien atacks can justify to spend millions of dollars in such a nonsense.
World becomes more and more crazy every day !
