Once Nagy added the four genes, many of the mature cells converted into stem cells—after 20 days the investigators identified up to 48 separate stem cell colonies. The cells remained pluripotent even after they removed the genes again. In effect, Nagy and his colleagues had, for the first time, created the equivalent of embryonic stem cells that were uncontroversially ethical, safe and efficient—a significant advance toward being able to use them in patients in a clinic. —Melinda Wenner
