Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThe research establishments are most likely going to be privatized, since the government won't be able to afford to run them if it's broke. It may be time for the government to withdraw from every aspect of people's lives and just stick with the absolute essential items, which are authorized in the constitution.
Probably though, government being what it is, it will continue growing until there is a monetary collapse from overspending and massive debt.
Actually there are no cuts. In fact there is an increase in spending.
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThere is a reduction in the growth of spending. Half of this years spending has been borrowed as will be the case for next year. It was also the case for the last few years.
The defense department appears to have been cut because they will no longer have the funds that they were using to fight full scale wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. They will have to make do on a peace time budget.
Are the cuts of this type NECESSARY? I think not. Have a look and read the article "$100 billion problem: Government duplicate spending" published by WWW.ITHENTICATE.COM and you will see where are the holes in the pot and you will see that there is a way how to patch them to have sufficient funds for R&D. In case patch is made, no cutting is needed. Where there is a will, there is a way.

And the medicine: centralized plagiarism detection system. It is worth this money, it is worth the results that R&D will produce for that money.

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisI for the most part agree except that I think there should be a flat tax of 75 or 80% plus anyone on public assistance or receiving public aid of any type should be required to work for some government facility at least three months of each year for free. That way it would free up monies for other purposes.

The reason the government seems to be broke is that you white people no longer have any Native American Indian worth anything to steal and resell. That is how the Congress used to pay everything off and build railroads... I think that the CDC and NIMH, NASA and especially the Bureau of Standards as well as the Smithsonian are absolutely necessary. Who would support a Livermore??? Isn't he the guy who used his own fortune to work on Radar during WW2? Not many folks like that around, surely not that Mormon rich guy or that Iowa theif who refuses to let towns and cities provide Internet service to Iowa citizens at decreased prices. Buffet is the one I mean, who claims to have given his fortune to Bill Gates for healthcare in third world nations... More like a way to hide income. Yes, we need government based research for all the duplication or we might have all died of SARS, EBOLA or even POLIO...

Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisThe real issue are the absolute spending levels. If you put aside the NIH/disease prevention budget, there is Defense, and then the meagre leftovers.
The bloated US military budget eats up all available funding leaving nothing to solve the real technological problems facing us (never mind funding "pure" research for astrophysics, particle physics etc. through NASA and national labs.)
