HANOI, Nov 5 (Reuters) - Flash floods and heavy rains from a tropical storm killed 98 after ploughing into central Vietnam this week and at least 20 people are missing, the government said on Thursday.

The storm destroyed more than 1,000 houses and inundated about 29,000 hectares of crops, the government's Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control said.

The Ministry of Defence had sent more than 4,000 soldiers to help rescue victims in the two hardest-hit provinces of Phu Yen and Binh Dinh.

Helicopters were also being used to drop food aid to residents in the villages isolated by rising floods in Binh Dinh and Phu Yen, the committee said. (Reporting by Nguyen Nhat Lam)
