The hype is huge, and the findings are somewhat disturbing--but the future of online dating looks good

It is easy to get hooked by the online world, but face-to-face meetings are the real test. Image: GETTY IMAGES

About two years ago I arranged to meet for coffee with a woman I had corresponded with online. I arrived early and sat at a table in a conspicuous spot. After a few minutes, a woman came to my table, sat down and said with big smile, "Hi, I'm Chris!"

But Chris was not the woman in the online photos. This wasn't a question of an age discrepancy or a new hairdo. She was a completely different woman. Chris was in marketing, you see, and to her it was simply a good strategy to post photographs that would draw in as many "customers" as possible. I never said a word about the photos. I just enjoyed our conversation and the refreshments. A few weeks later I noticed that Chris had replaced the photos with those of yet another woman.

A good appraoch to on-line dating is to use video chat. This allows you to see the other in real time, with a real face and have a real conversation. If you harmonize in the chat then maybe meeting is a good idea. If not that's ok too.

The truth about the online dating is that www.match.com and eharmoney.com are the largest players. Some companies like http://www.matchspecial.com, true.com and date.com are also a way to find matchs as well.

You have to be very careful in this day in age and use your better judgment when meeting people off line. My thoughts on online dating, as a professional working class woman it's hard for me to actually hit the club scene or local bars (1) that's just not my thing (2) I have to be careful about where I go and who I socialize with. I spend a lot of time on the internet so I kind of think internet chat/ meeting could be a great thing it just has to be done with caution, you have to be very selective of the sites you join, all social sites are not good social sites or do like I did I created my own International Social & Networking Community for working class professionals call Urnew Connect my site url is http://www.urnewconnect.com it's a total free community, you can mix & mingle, shop, listen to music, chat browse profiles or find entertainment for free. I set the pace and tone so therefore kids or teens don't even attempt to join certain things just aren't tolerated on my site.

Back in the day, dating online was something no one talked about. Relying on the computer to generate a list of potential dates seemed to indicate a certain desperation, social ineptitude or level of geekdom, and the social stigma was overwhelming.

This is a GREAT article on the subject of dating in the 21st Century! I am the author of "Oops, I Married a Con Artist," and have since found that because of easy online anonymity, there is rampant opportunity for deception in dating. This situation is also magnified by the fact that deceptive people are protected from criminal procecution due to the fact they are protected by "community property law" or the civil nature of romantic relationships, and law enforcement will do little to nothing about fraud within relationships!

There is little left to do except for people to be proactive about their dating life. There is a new service, which does just this, and I think everyone should know about it. It's called the Dating Passport, (www.thedatingpassport.com) and it is the World's First Dating ID!

What a concept, but it does give you an opportunity to prove that you are not a VIRTUAL STRANGER, and of course, to ask others to prove the same.

It weeds out the fakes who hide behind 10 year old photos of when they had a full head of hair and were in shape :D

Once you have piece of mind then you can exchange real info or meet in person and you can learn a lot from someones voice! Happy Hunting...

You do have to be careful when meeting people online these days. Also, its hard to judge by peoples' profiles what they are actually like since many people equivocate themselves online into a person that they think others will find attractive.

Fuego Connect, a new, high-end, free site for active singles prevents a little of this deception because the questions users are required to answer aim specifically at personal topics. For example, Fuego Connect asks users to identify their life passion and how it has shaped their life.

I would recommend trying out Fuego Connect, whether you are looking to make a friend who shares your passions or find a date.

Dating sites that bombard you with emails from other "so called" members the minute you register are best avoided. Chat room pop ups and the like are a distinct sign of a dodgy dating site. Try not to let yourself be drawn in with such tactics. Misrepresentations are extremely common in the dating industry. In a recent lawsuit, a Scotts-dale dating service agreed to pay $500,000 in restitution and fines settling a lawsuit filed by the State Attorney General. The Scots-dale dating service engaged sales tactics and misrepresentations to sell over priced memberships.

Other alarming research states that around 50% of people tell lies on their online dating profile. What these people hope to achieve by this tactic is extremely short sighted as real life meetings will always uncover the truth which is seeing more and more genuine singles losing faith with their online dating experiences.

There is no way that anyone in their right mind would fork out a $50.00 subscription for an online dating membership to a new and unknown dating site when there are several tried and trusted dating sites with 100s of 1000s of singles on their database.

Out of the sixty new dating sites launched each week, it is thought that around only 5% will have any sort of success. So the only thing accomplished by this daily influx of free online dating sites is that the consumer is left disillusioned, frustrated and disappointed with the whole selection process. To find the dating site that is the real deal always go for one that has a huge database and that is well known.

While you can never be 100% sure on these things there is always the option of having a friend talk to them online too. Often if a person is lying they will get the details of their lies mixed up. You can also get your friend to call the person on things which might upset them. That way you aren't the bad guy.

Still, the only way to know for sure is to meet them. Like others have said, do so in a well populated area. You might even consider a double date.http://www.goodwizz.com is the best place provide the most comfortable ways to meet people online. provide a meeting place where millions of single people could meet each other, relax, be encouraged, entertained and feel happy, where every alone heart can find the soul mate, dating tips, because online dating is really a big chance to open your heart and to be heard.discover friends , you'll meet new friends not only in your area but all over the world.

Anyone who's online dating MUST read this article. This guy has been toiling through internet dating for the past 2+ years, and reveals all. Great read:

I’m now in my third year of swashbuckling through the online dating scene. Though I haven’t met too many girls who were blog-worthy, I’ve learned some valuable lessons these past two years. Before I signed up, I was great at seducing women at bars and clubs, but an infant when it came to dating. In addition to getting laid, one of my goals with this online experiment was to build my coffee/dinner/drinks “first date” experience. While I still have a ways to go before proclaiming expert status on the art of dating, I’ve made significant strides because of my trials. I’ve toyed with all sorts of profile styles to have finally come up with something that works. I’ve learned how to judge girls’ profiles with 95% accuracy. I’ve learned how to “seize” a date without cockblocking myself. And lastly, I’ve now screwed up enough to know what not to do on a date. Having messed up royally on numerous occasions and thus wasting countless hours on this stuff, I’d like to give back to the people—both male and female—so everyone can make their dating life more efficient and less of a headache.
