What is Evo-Devo?

A SciAm editor explains this core concept of evolution

Episode 3 of our new video podcast, Instant Egghead (subscribe!) tackles the most important development in scientific thinking about evolution since the Modern Synthesis.

As always, the brains behind this operation are writer/director/producer John Pavlus (more posts by him at 60 Second Science here) and cameraman Steven Boling.

Special thanks to science blogger extraordinaire PZ Myers, who screened a first draft of the script.

Who is that 12-year-old on the video? It's really simple and doesn't require 60 seconds. Evolutionary developmental biology (evolution of development or informally, evo-devo) is a field of biology that compares the developmental processes of different animals and plants in an attempt to determine the ancestral relationship between organisms and how developmental processes evolved.

One of the best introductions to Evo-Devo is the book by a University of Wisconsin professor entitled "Endless Forms Most Beautiful: The New Science of Evo Devo" by Sean B. Carroll. An excellent read -- highly recommended.

I wish in the 1 minute there was more indication of what the switches were controlling.
