Bigfoot expert weighs in: "I'm extremely skeptical"

Professor MeldrumA press conference in Palo Alto, Calif. tomorrow is planned to showcase yesterday's bold claim that the remains of a Sasquatch, or bigfoot, have been found in northern Georgia. Matthew Whitton, a police officer, and Rick Dyer, a former corrections officer, along with veteran Bigfoot tracker Tom Biscardi of Searching for Bigfoot, Inc., said they came across the seven-foot, seven-inch (2.3-meter), 500-pound (227-kilogram) body of a simianlike creature in the woods. The group also said DNA tests are being carried out and that a team of undisclosed scientists will examine the corpse.

ScientificAmerican.com contacted Jeffrey Meldrum, a prominent researcher on Sasquatch and professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University in Pocatello, who has studied bigfoot prints and other clues like hair samples. Meldrum has written a book on the subject of whether or not the mystery beast is real, and has previously said that "the evidence that exists fully justifies the investigation and the pursuit of this question."

Cryptids, or bizarre, undocumented animals like the "Montauk monster" and the chupacabra, have been making the news rounds lately. Will this latest claim wither under scrutiny, or have these amateur bigfoot hunters in fact really found something?

An edited transcript of what Meldrum had to say about this week's supposed discovery follows.

What do you think of this announcement of a bigfoot body being found in Georgia?

I'm extremely skeptical about this bigfoot claim. I haven't been contacted by any of the principal [people] involved in this. I've had interactions with Tom Biscardi [the bigfoot hunter holding the press conference] in the past, and based on that history, I would say that anything he is involved in is suspect. The fact that the two Georgian men [who said they found the body] turned to him and not anyone with scientific credentials is very questionable.

What about the pictures?

So a picture is worth a 1,000 words. What I've seen so far is not compelling in the least, and I think the pictures cast grave doubts on their claim. It just looks like a costume with some fake guts thrown on top for effect. Even if [the bigfoot carcass] had have been eviscerated by a predator or a scavenger, [the entrails] wouldn't just be sitting up on top like that. Someone says [on the Internet] that they've found an off-the-shelf costume that looks a lot like the figure in these pictures.

So apparently [the bigfoot finders] stuffed the body into a freezer. You look at it and there doesn't seem to be any mass there, of muscles and bones and so forth. Also, they tried freezing the corpse in a block of ice—you wouldn't do that if you were trying to preserve a specimen, unless you're trying to hide the details.

So what is the story with the Sasquatch DNA evidence?

All the rumors about the bigfoot DNA results are just that: rumors. I spoke to Curtis Nelson (a biologist from the University of Minnesota) who is doing the DNA tests, and he all he could say is that there are no results yet—he can't say anything more due to a nondisclosure agreement. Apparently Curt just received a vial of tissue in the mail, and there's no chain of custody, no validation that this tissue came from the corpse in question. Since there is no known Sasquatch genetic material to compare it to, he may just end up with a gene sequence that doesn't match any other primates, at best.

Why would anyone stake such an outrageous claim without proof?

I don't know what their motivation would be. I don't see how they think they can perpetuate such a hoax in this day and age. You hold out hope that bigfoot will be found one day, and to some extent this is probably what that event would be like. But assuming that this kind of scenario transpires at some point, hopefully it wouldn't unfold in such a carnival atmosphere and the proper authorities and scientists would be involved.

The pictures are real , High res ,and shocking in my veiw.
On top of it, these guys dont care who believes they just know allready.

An extraordinary claim requires extraordinary evidence. If this claim is legitimate, the claimant will have no problems providing providing all the evidence necessary to convince the most skeptical observer.

Bigfoot in a freezer. … I wish it was real as much as the next guy, but I am extremely skeptical. The source, the failure to be more forthcoming, the overwhelming lack of historical proof all lead towards a lot of disappointed people Friday after the “News Conference”. If anyone still buys into this Saturday morning, I have a chunk of Mermaid in my freezer. I can’t tell you where I found it in order to protect the rest of the merpeople I saw hanging around the corpse. Come on..........

LOL This guy is skeptical because the body wasn't allowed to be examined by "those with creditentials" Thats a good one...anything that disputes evolution or the scientific clique's current view of things is suddenly destroyed or disappears! If you find something...don't give it to the smithsonian, FBI, local museum or anyone with supposed "creditentials"!! Document the @#%& out of it and contact a pot full of media with cameras! Then maybe something will really be released to the public!!! all in my humble opinion of course ;)

Hype....and nothing more. I this day and age when almost anything can be faked, you have to get the evidence out there where everyone can see it as soon as possible. Keeping this "body" secret only fuels the skeptics so if it was real (which I do not belive for a second) then they should have taken a intense set of photos and video, taken samples, and as was said before, contacted the media and had every reported on planet earth there to document. They are not hiding something, they are hiding everything and if you got the real goods, you don't keep it all under the table.

I want to complain about this whole line of discussion centered around "there has to be a body in order to prove Bigfoot exists." Why not studying them in the wild? Someone is going to kill one of these shy and magnificent creatures just to prove they exist -- but then one less of them exists. It makes me crazy and sad to think about it. Bunnies exist. Lots of them. They eat plants in my garden and run away when I try to approach them. I've never seen a dead one, but I still know they exist.

I've seen Dr. Meldrum interviewed a number of times on TV and interviews replayed on the internet. I agree with Jake George, Meldrum is knowledgeable and professional. If I found a Bigfoot body, he's the one I'd call.

Somewhere I saw an experiment -- I can't remember if it was online or on MonterQuest. They took a fresh killed deer carcas (it has been hit by a car) and staked it down in the woods so it couldn't be dragged off, then set up a time-lapse camera to see how long it took to decay. How long do you think before all that was left was bones? I'll come back and post the answer after a few guesses.

All we need is a DNA test by a legitimate, well-established laboratory to establish whether this story is a hoax or not. I'm expect that DNA test will never happen. There will always be some excuse by the "discoverers" to prevent it or the evidence from surfacing if it turns out to be a fake. If it is actually tested, I'm betting that the corpse will be a bear or some other large animal. Perhaps a sewn-together chimera from someone's imagination. I seriously doubt that it is what they claim that it is.

If this bigfoot body turns out to be fake...... it will damage the reputation of every "honest" bigfoot researcher that is out there. Also, the existance of a real living bigfoot will be cast into doubt, and never believed by the masses. If that happens, these fonies shoud be stalked and imprisioned!!! I hope they have found a body that has died by natural causes, then the world will believe and we can pass some laws to protect the species form those that will hunt the creature down.

seriously, its not even that hard to change a dna sample. all they would have to do is use a gene splicer protein, and then mix it with other dna, and sometimes it will stick and form an altered dna. my bio class did it and we got results, they could have done that too, and run it through a gell and seen that the dna is unique/similar enough to be passed off as bigfoot.
~wow my bio teacher would be proud! lol

Okay, look. The supposed body looks very "freshly dead". Since decomposition starts to set in almost immediately after death, they would have had to have found it fresh and then had that freezer pretty darn close by to get it frozen that quickly. Pretty hard to do that out in the backwoods. Plus look at the teeth. They are bright white. Unless there's a sasquatch using whitener and brushing regularly... wild critters usually have pretty dirty teeth.

Pdiddy, this is what is on the website you listed:

    "Please be advised:

    We've received many emails asking
if we have photos of a Temagami island sasquatch.

Ontario Sasquatch does not comment on these kinds of rumours. We don't discuss confidential witness communications, and we won't comment on whether or not we've received photos from any source.

We'd very much like to thank everyone who has sent in questions and comments about this."

You can get on a forum but can't get a picture out???? Email them to mattburns26@yahoo.com and I will have the pictures posted ASAP.

Scientists have been demanding proof of bigfoot's existence, and when someone has a body to show them, they seem to lack interest in it. I would say that a body represents better proof than film.

Too bad Bigfoot is NOT running for President...we need some vital new leadership! We all need to believe in Bigfoot because we need mystery and unexplained phenomena to remind us that there are powers on the Earth and in the Universe far greater than Big Oil, WalMart and NeoCons. I have been deep into the coast redwoods, up and down the Hoh River trail, into the Goat Rocks and Wm. O. Douglas and it is very easy to believe Bigfeet live, even though I have never seen the slightest trace of them. A clue to the reality is the name "Sasquatch". The native Americans knew of this creature long ago and gave it a name. "49ers" in California ran into them and reported them numerous times. There is something of reality in the myth. Too bad, also, that fakers and hoaxers continuously try to cash in on the legend. I would certainly hope no one ever puts a Bigfoot in a zoo!

I'd like to see Bigfoot to be proven true as much as the next guy. Can't think of anything more exciting for science except possible ET walking into the Fox News studio during 'Fox & Friends'.

Sadly, the folks claiming "proof" in the form on Tomagami pics, these guys in GA, and all the rest, are simple hoaxers looking to fill a vast void in their lives. The closest thing to a plausible explanation is that the GA incident is a Jack Links' publicity stunt. (That would actually tickle me!) The people involved in GA have no credibility (Cops lie all the time, folks. I dated one for years & my grandfather retired from the Baltimore PD, and every other cop I know will admit it...). As for photos, isn't it amazing that in this age of automatic-focus digital photography that not a single pic is EVER in focus? That tells you a lot.

Tom Biscardi stated that an Igor & Dmitri are coming from Russia to view the supposed Bigfoot body. I've done a little research and these guys must be Igor Bourtsev & Dmitri Bayanov. Apparently they are Russia's most famous Bigfoot Investigators are fluent in English & are experts in the bigfoot area. Both are Hominologists and have written many books together on the subject of Bigfoot. Maybe Biscardi isn't lying. Let it play out and see what happens. Then decide!

I like how instead of putting this out there for all to see and to get the skeptics on board, they pull some other Bigfoot "experts" into it. I can't believe that only a bigfoot believer is qualified to evaluate the legitimacy of a bigfoot body. If this is even a real body, it is probably just a guy who has been lost in the woods and finally came close to getting out until he met up with some guys who hunt beasts with a high powered rifle. "Sorry guy, but you is go'n in the frige."

As well as a pissed Canadian film producer.
Apparently some in a production house in Toronto Canada has let crucial pictures out to the net and misconstruded the information
And Its about time someone reveals what really happened in Temagami
    Ontario Canada to Ben Matine.

    Just got this from Pdiddy

This truly is the real thing
There is a huge internal scandal about Ben Matine and James Jardineau
The production company that did the documentary stumbled on to some sensitive shit.
There is also a bigfoot blog that has had misconstrued information.
Some Toronto investigations firm has really clamped down on this story
6 months ago there were 20 logs of Matine and now there is nothing
I can't wait to see what comes of this.

It's all Bull$h!t.... They found out that it's a rubber suite & they scammed Bacardi out of a cash advance for the frozen body. As the body thawed... they removed some hair and preformed a heat test, it melted. then they accelerated the melting process on the foot... it was rubber. The two scammers have now disappeared and signed a affidavit that it was a hoax. The cop has lost his job for good. I hope these pigs get stalked & beaten to death! I wanted to believe but I was an a$$, Come on fools...there is NO bigfoot!!!

I agree with wolfkiss -- This is far beneath what I expect to read about in SciAm. These threads have gone from discussing legitimate scientific issues to being filled with maroons and 'believers' attracted by whatever idiotic garbage takes their fancy.------------------ As soon as you throw away science and common sense and open the doors to 'faith and belief' in any subject, you open a Pandora's Box that allows any wacko story or "miracle" or "my God is better than your God" garbage to flood the universe with 'demons'.-------------------- If SciAm could get back on target -- and stop trying to attract internet traffic with sensationalist trash -- maybe these people will naturally disperse to those websites that cater to their ilk, where they can gawk at "real photos" of bigfoot, UFOs, ghosts, and weeping Virgin Marys to their hearts' content.---------------- This same thing happened to the Skeptics forum, with the result that hundreds of legitimate scientists and thinking people with thoughtful, considered, facts and qualified opinions were overwhelmed by thousands of ignorant, hysterical 'believers' and crackpots -- and people fled.----------- What a waste. If this continues, then the weirdos can have the place and I'm gone.

In September, high-energy beams of protons will begin circulating around the LHC's 27-kilometer (16.8-mile) accelerator ring located 100 meters (328 feet) underground at CERN, the European particle physics lab based in Geneva, Switzerland. After a period of testing, the beams will cross paths inside the detectors and the first collisions will take place.

Even before the machine is ramped up to its maximum energy early next year, it will smash protons together with more energy than any previous collider. The debris from those collisions--showers of subatomic particles that the detectors will track and record--will yield results that could radically change our understanding of the physical world.

In a talk at the American Physical Society meeting earlier this year, Seiden gave an overview of the LHC research program, including a rough timeline for reaching certain milestones. One of the most highly anticipated milestones, for example, is detection of the Higgs boson, a hypothetical particle that would fill a major gap in the standard model of particle physics by endowing fundamental particles with mass. Detection of the Higgs boson is most likely to occur in 2010, Seiden said.
