Patrick Swayze — in the first interview since his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer last year — discussed his battle with the disease yesterday with Barbara Walters. Swayze has Stage IV pancreatic cancer, the most advanced level, in which the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms in the U.S. Just 20 percent of those who are diagnosed are still alive a year later.
"You can bet that I'm going through hell," Swayze, 56, told ABC's Walters. "And I've only seen the beginning of it."
Swayze, who was diagnosed last March, has taken an experimental drug called vatalanib.
He didn't dance around his chances last night. In an echo of the famous "watch me now!" lyric from Dirty Dancing's "Do You Love Me?" he responded to the tough odds: "Watch me! You watch what I pull off."
Another public figure who was treated for pancreatic cancer, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, has been back in the health headlines this week. His 2004 treatment for an early stage of the cancer was reported successful. But Apple said this week that Jobs was suffering from a "hormone imbalance" that was starving his body of necessary nutrients. Experts told ScientificAmerican.com that the imbalance could be linked to problems with his pancreas.

Patrick has been my hero since forever (Ghost, Dirty Dancing) and if prayer can work miracles then I'll be a praying fool. I envy and admire a married couple that can make a marriage work and last the way they have. You both a truly blessed, loved and admired. God bless you always.

Yeah the interview was good but I was truly mad at some of the stupid and senseless questions asked by Barbara. Come on! I love Patrick and his strength he and his wife both have as they go through this and they have all my prayers but let's use some common sense Barbara. Don't know if I'll watch any more of your interviews after that one. Praying you will beat this and all your fans I'm sure feel the same.

The timing couldn't have been more helpful for me -- just that day I got word my sister's pancreatic cancer is inoperable. And one of my favorite roles that you played was Orry Main in North & South. Not to mention I liked you in all the favorites and those that may not have been so favorites of everyone. i have never submitted any comments to any website and this is the first time. what a warrior this man is. he makes me think how rediculous some of my thoughts and problems are. at a time when america is facing it's greatest challenges he domonstrates to us all a super power and undefined determination unimaginable to mankind. in my eyes he will walks with christ for now and forever. most men would lay down and die, but he has rised to the occasion and fights with a greatest strength i have ever seen in any man. his philosphy of life, (the soul, the angels and soul mates) i can certainly relate to. and only strentghens my own beliefs. his life on earth will never end for he has shared with us all a sense of courage and strength, which i'm sure will never be forgotten. all of his films live in my mind and heart forever. he is a timeless saint in the book of endless souls. we call into sick to work because of a tummy ache and this man filmed 13 episodes of a tv seires uncountless hours 5 days a week with chemo on the side. damb man, if this guy doesn't stand right next to whoever we each may think god is, then something is wrong. i also commend A & E for giving him the opportunity to prove himself and for reminding us all what america is really about. As you can see Mr. Swayze is already showing signs and Steve Jobs has also suffered tremendous weight loss from the disease. I hope these prominent people help bring awarenes to this disease and better treatment options are discovered. I pray for Mr. Swayze's health and for his family's strength.

Patrick, you are very lucky to have somebody that obviously adores you by your side. Your determination to getting well is so familiar to me and have to tell you that I used the same methods of thinking as I fought 3 bouts of cancer myself.

I know that most people's favorite's are Dirty Dancing and Ghost. But, Patrick Swayze is known for more than those movies, at least to me. He is one of the Great Actor's and he has SO MUCH HEART! It's a nice thing to see when a person gives so much of that part of themselves in their acting. That is one reason you are a favorite of mine Patrick. When he was doing North & South it was about the same time that he lost his own father and the true emotion that he felt in that part. It is truly an amazing gift that you have Patrick. And don't let anyone ever say that it isn't a thing men shouldn't do. It make's you more of a man when you can show your emotions and still remain the man that you are.

to each his own when it comes to religion. but not so sure scientolgy should be considered a religion in my opinion. i was in hollywood 30 years ago and had to go through a very long application process to even be considered to be a part of their church. i failed to meet there guidelines. so be it. sort of sad when religion starts out as a business.

He had read an article about her fighting cancer. She was eleven years old at the time. Priscilla was so thrilled and upon meeting him she sat on his lap but would NOT kiss him, so he gave her a big kiss on the cheek.

Swayze and many others who suffer cancer, MS, and a host of immune deficiency diseases can be helped with a miracle drug called low dose naltrexone. He is the 1/2 % statistic that lived more than seven years after diagnosis. The smaller he appeared to others, the bigger he grew in my eyes. Most people cannot fathom this excrutiating disease. My wish for Patrick is privacy, patience and polenta.

I also saw the Barbara Walters interview. Don't watch the tube much...heard it was going to be on on the radio. 'Til then I didn't know Patrick was ill. After watching I did something I haven't done for a long time. Started to pray. I think he is blessed to have such a loving wife & for many years I have thought he was a special man.

I know he can beat this, I heard him say that there is no cure for this and i know that some Doctors have linked cancer with fungus, they can't tell the difference between the 2. Patrick needs to talk to Oprah in private what she took to get rid of her cancer, Patrick will be surprised!! I will pray for him and keep his hopes up cause GOD knows the way.

I know that a person like Patrick Swayze has know choice of the matter but to fight. I hope that they come up with a cure to kill this disease. My dad, brother in-law, uncle, and cousin died of cancer, so I know that this is very hard for Patrick and others. My prayers are with Patrick and all others, keep on having faith and believe. God is always their for us and if their is a cure out their he will make it happen. Patrick keep on smiling and that goes to all the other patients that share this with Patrick.

Canadian Folk/Rock Singer, Ronnie Hawkins was diagnosed over 5 years ago with Pancreatic Cancer. There was even a Farewell Benefit concert for him which was attended by former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

Patrick Swayze was inspiring on the Barbara Walters special. I was moved by his honesty and strength to live life to its fullest against all odds. Last night when I said my prayers I prayed for Patrick and his family. I have never prayed for a "movie star" before but his challenge and character has touched my life. My father died of stage 4 lung cancer in October 2007 after 6 months of chemo and radiation. He lost his battle on earth but is in a much better place. I wish Patrick and Lisa a joyful time together. I believe in eating and taking products made by God not man. Carmen on TBN said if you want to be healthy eat what God made not what man made. I descovered it was true. I had acid reflux and the drugs the doctors gave me to take made it worse. I saw a program on koce, ch.50, which is on all the time, called Hope Formula For Ultimate health, by Mrs. Brenda Watson. Photographed behind a camera, and editied to a finished film for people to falsely believe in. Life is not like what is in the movies. I believe Patrick is a product of what he as eaten and smoked in his life. I made some wrong choices, in life, but I made a good choice to use Shaklee products and not smoke or drink alcohol to much. USA doctors use this procedure with microprobe, but it only gets into two inches of the matter. We waited to to start our family when we(my wife and I were) were close to retirement so that we could spend time as a family and have a God related and guided family. But to our surprise 2 years after retirement from the Navy I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in JUN 06 and given only 6 months to live at the time. I told those doctors to kiss my ass in 15 years and so far we have to wait 12 more years. Things are looking good right know and I hope that they are for you as well. I have been in the Hospital the last week at comunity East in Indianapolis. Just keep up your faith in God, do as your Doctors say and take it easy if you feel down. I have always followed you carrier sence North and South and like how you act. Don't let this get you down.

A lot of people are amazed but I truly believe that Patrick and I are being protected by our guardian angels. Please quit smoking Patrick as this may help in your battle. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his wife during this trying time. I thought the Barbara Walters special was very good. Patrick you are an inspiration to so many people. I have a husband serving in Iraq and sometimes I get down and it's nothing to what you are going through. To see the love you two have and the strength is great. I agree. I was horrified she asked Lisa if she has thought about life with out Patrick. What a stupid question. Of course she would have and i bet she threw that thought out of head seconds later. I must admit I dont think I would watch another interview anyway, they seem very negative, acting like there is no hope. There is always hope. I am an optomist and that interview brought me down. Patrick was defiant in his attitude and that is what his wife needs right now. He is showing her that he will fight with all his might to remian here.

Doctors removed a 5lb tumor wrapped in her intestines and the cancer had spread to a piece of her lung and also a piece of her stomach. Chemotheropy was hard for her and the entire family...but through it all she kept a smile on her face and always making jokes. She was the light at the end of the tunnel for us..there were a lot of hard times. Pancreatic cancer as well as any cancer is scary, but the doctors said they had 2 treat it aggresively due to the fact that u can't live without your pancreas and its such a rare cancer and not a lot of people survive from it. Hard times were ahead for her and our family..blood transfusions, cat scans, mri's, chemotheropy, pet scans but she was like a soldier and kept a brave face through it all and even made jokes..
Reply | Report Abuse | Link to thisWell today my cousin is a beautiful 17 year old woman who is involved with ROTC in school and looking forward to graduating high school in June of this year..something we thought we wouldn't see 5 years ago! She's looking forward to going to college too. She is closely monitored still at Hasbro Childrens Hospital in Providence R.I and has her annual check ups but is fine. The only side affect from the chemo is a slight curve of the spine..and a little out of breath due to the lung that was affected and removed by the cancer. Doctors were concerned that she would never be able to have children due to the massive amounts of chemo but she is able to have kids in the future..DISTANT future..I hope that this is encouraging for anyone to read that is going through this or has a loved one who is going through the same or similar situation..even Patrick Swayze who we pray for every night before we go to bed. We know the struggles he's going through right now and hope that everything goes in his favor and that God will lay his loving hands on you and your wife Lisa in this trying time in their lives. May your love get you through this and your faith in your doctors.
