Science jobs from VIB Department of Structural Biology, VUB :
Our goal is this conduct high-quality research in structural biology, in particular on intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), a recently discovered important class of proteins that exist and function without well-defined 3D structures. These proteins defy the classical structure-function paradigm, yet they play important roles in signaling and regulation, and are often involved in disease. The Tompa lab uses a combination of computational, structural and biophysical techniques to uncover the structure-function relationship of these proteins.
The successful candidate will contribute to a project conducted in collaboration with the leading pharma company in Belgium, Janssen Pharmaceutica, on the structural characterization and inhibitor development of an important cancer-related intrinsically disordered target protein. We plan to use NMR for solving the structural ensemble of this target protein, followed by computational design, development and optimization of small molecules to interfere with its action in cancer-related biochemical and cell-biological assays.
The research will be conducted in the laboratories of the Department of Structural Biology of VIB at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB, Free University of Brussels). VIB is an excellence-based entrepreneurial institute that focuses on translating basic scientific results into pharmaceutical, agricultural and industrial applications. The Department hosts 8 research groups and 90 scientists, focusing on exploring protein structure and biomolecular interaction networks by combining expertise in structural biology, biophysics and molecular biology. Our primary techniques are NMR (Agilent 800MHz and 600MHz), X-ray crystallography (Rigaku MicroMax 007HF) and SAXS (Rigaku BioSAXS-1000), complemented by a range of biophysical techniques (SPR, ITC, CD, DSC, AFM, MALS).
The candidate is expected to hold a PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, structural biology or similar, and have: knowledge in NMR spectroscopy (data acquisition, data processing and analysis) experience with molecular biology and recombinant protein technology computational skills, possibly including molecular docking a general background knowledge and experience in biochemistry and protein science Candidates with an industrial background are encouraged to apply.
h1. We offer:
A two year contract, subject to renewal.
