Moffitt Cancer Center, Florida's only NCI-designated cancer center, is seeking a Core Staff Scientist. The successful candidate will join the Moffitt Cancer Center's Cancer Informatics Core Facility as a Staff Scientist focused on Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. The position offers a wide range of challenging bioinformatics projects in close collaboration with a broad spectrum of investigators including fellow computational biologists, molecular biologists and physician-scientists aimed at translating discoveries into clinical care for the prevention and cure of cancer.
The position is intended to primarily support melanoma and skin research studies in collaboration with members of the Melanoma Center of Excellence and the Skin SPORE at the Moffitt Cancer Center. Responsibilities will include analyzing in-house generated molecular data sets (e.g. next-gen gene sequencing, gene expression, and mass-spectrometry based proteomics) as well as external public available datasets.
The candidate will provide bioinformatics and computational support to multiple projects/teams and assist in design, interpretation, and visualization of data, and thus move our science, and personalized medicine forward.
Moffitt Cancer Center includes a 206-bed hospital, three ambulatory care facilities, a 36-bed inpatient blood and marrow transplant unit, a high volume screening program, and state-of-the-art clinical, translational and basic science research space.
Successful candidates must have an a minimum of PhD with 2+ years experience, or MS with 5+ years relevant experience, in bioinformatics, computer science and/or the life sciences. Previous experience in molecular biology, cancer biology, immunology, or a related field is strongly preferred. Experience working with biologists and statisticians to develop and apply novel biomedical informatics approaches using tools such as C, C++, Perl/Python, HTML, JAVA, XML, Apache, database tools and SQL. Applicants must have experience with commercial and/or open-source software applications for biological sequence analysis and microarray analysis.
Additional experience with software related to principle component analysis (PCA), SNP analysis, and proteomics analysis is strongly preferred. Experience in analyzing large molecular datasets and generating biologically relevant conclusions from them, such as identification of biomarkers, differentially expressed genes, biological pathways, and associations with clinical outcomes. Experience in downloading and using publically available molecular datasets and performing necessary QC, de-batching, and validation of such data. Experience in R/Bioconductor or MATLAB. Candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment is required.
