Science jobs from University Medical Center Mainz, Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (CTH):
PhD candidate student in Immunology & Hemostaseology (m/f)
The University Medical Center Mainz of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is ranked as a leading research institution of Germany having a strong immunology program. Our laboratory is affiliated to the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (CTH), funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as well as the Department of Hematology, Pneumology and Oncology. Objectives of the PhD program are to create an attractive environment for basic & translational research and improved career opportunities for young researchers.
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate student to study the mechanisms of innate and adaptive immunity in the context of experimental sepsis and acute lung injury. The projects aim to investigate the molecular interactions of immune responses and the coagulation system. A special area of interest is the role of macrophage-derived cytokines and related signaling pathways as well as role of novel pathogen associated molecular patterns. These basic and translational research projects are primarily conducted in murine models in vitro and in vivo, and require state-of-the-art techniques in immunology, molecular biology and hemostaseology. Complex mouse breeding strategies, rodent survival surgery and generation of bone-marrow chimeric mice will be performed. In addition, cell culture techniques (isolation of macrophages, neutrophils, platelets) as well as flow cytometry, RT-PCR, ChIP assays, ELISA, Western blotting, bead-based assays, aggregometry, lentiviral transductions, immunostainings, intra-vital microscopy and massive parallel sequencing technologies will be employed.
The PhD student will have opportunities in designing as well as conducting independent projects including surgical in vivo models of sepsis (cecal ligation & puncture). The duration of the projects will be 3-4 years. Based on individual credentials and experience, an application for extramural PhD stipends is encouraged.
An M.Sc. or diploma degree in a relevant field is required and a strong background in Immunology and/or Hemostaseology is preferred. Ability in initiating, conducting, evaluating and reporting of research studies is essential. Experiences with tissue cultures, transgenic mouse models and molecular biology methodologies are desirable. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
The PhD student will have the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary and highly motivated team of scientists and clinicians. Further information is available:
Please send your application materials (CV, letter of motivation, list of references, official transcripts: diplomas, Abiturzeugnis) in English or German to Dr. Markus Bosmann:
