Science jobs from Mount Sinai Medical Center:
A postdoctoral fellowship is available to join the labs of Dr. Miriam Merad and Dr. Brian Brown at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan. The project is aimed at investigating the dynamic relationship between the innate and adaptive immune system. Amongst other things, the candidate will investigate interactions between T cells and tissue dendritic cells and macrophages to determine how these interactions influence the development of autoimmune disease and cancer.

Proper control of the immune system is critical to human health. A hypersensitive immune system can lead to allergies and autoimmune disease, whereas impairment of the immune system leaves an individual susceptible to infections and even cancers. Dendritic cells and macrophages play an important role in ensuring proper regulation of the immune system. In response to pathogens, dendritic cells and macrophages rapidly alter their phenotype to limit the spread of infection, and initiate a T cell and B cell response. Dendritic cells and macrophages are also involved in preventing autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and type I diabetes, by maintaining tolerance to self-antigens. The Merad and Brown labs are working together to decipher how macrophages and dendritic cells regulate immunity and tolerance, and to determine the genetic networks that regulate these important cells.

A strong background in immunology, with skills in handling and analysis of mouse models is a must. Expertise in flow cytometry (FACS), molecular biology, and mammalian cell culture are also desirable. Specific details about the project will be provided to candidates during an interview, but a background on our research can be found by reading some of our recent papers: Agudo J et al.
