Assistant professor in plant genetics and breeding informatics


Subject area: Usage of omics methods and informatics for efficient utilization of plant genetic variation in plant breeding.

Duties: Research and teaching on plant breeding and genetics based on omic-sciences. The position is intended to link the department's current activities in plant breeding and product quality with breeding informatics and omics methods. This requires sound scientific knowledge in genetics and practical experience of omics methods and informatics. The applicant shall have an understanding of high-throughput genotyping, precise phenotyping, and breeding informatics. Experience in project management and coordination, collaboration with plant breeders and plant scientists, as well as interaction with relevant stakeholders is desirable. The chosen candidate will proactively interact with a vigorous interdisciplinary team of scientists working on plant genetic resources, product quality and plant breeding and biotechnology. The position also involves teaching undergraduate and graduate students.

Qualifications: Eligible for employment as an assistant professor are those who hold a doctorate or have equivalent academic qualifications. Priority should be given to candidates who received a PhD or equivalent qualifications no longer than seven years before the application deadline. For an appointment as assistant professor, the candidate must be scientifically proficient in the subject area of the position. Experience of research environments outside SLU equivalent to a post-doctoral period, or a doctoral degree from another university is a merit.

Good ability to communicate in written and spoken English is required.

Assessment criteria: On consideration for appointment as assistant professor the emphasis is primarily put on qualitative indicators of the applicant's academic skills. Furthermore, the assessment also includes evaluating the applicant's ability to develop an independent line of research within the research field, and to meet the requirements for promotion to senior lecturer in the context of the employment qualifications.

Particular emphasis will be on proven scientific expertise in identifying, and locating genes and their trait control using advanced omics-technologies. Demonstrated capabilities to compete for extramural grants, and teaching experience are an advantage. Attention will also be paid to communication skills and ability to work broadly across several of the department's activities as well as administrative experience relevant to the subject area and duties.

Form of employment: Temporary employment 6 months or longer, The employment is for a limited period of time, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance. An associate senior lectureship is a qualifying position, and the first step in an academic career at SLU. An associate senior lecturer is entitled during their employment period to apply for review for promotion to senior lecturer.

It is situated close to the student towns of Lund and Malmö, a short distance from the sea and in close proximity to Copenhagen's city life. The Öresund region is in an expansive phase, in which knowledge, education and research have a central significance. On Campus Alnarp, the focus is on landscape planning and horticulture.
