The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

The department of Geoscience, section Marine Geochemistry, invites applications for a position as

PhD Student

within the project GB1 as part of the collaboration with MARUM centre for Marine Environmental Sciences.

Project summary and tasks: The MARUM subproject `GB1' has its focus on studies of particle flux, carbon turnover and nutrient regeneration. The goal of this Ph.D. project is to collect data on organic lipid biomarkers and associated proxy parameters on suspended and sinking particles from the marine water column. The data will be used to study sinking velocities of different particle types, mechanisms of particle export, and rates of degradation of specific lipid classes during sinking.

Requirements: A degree in geosciences (geochemistry), chemistry or biological/chemical oceanography Enthusiasm for marine geological research Experience in organic-geochemical laboratory analyses Ability to work in interdisciplinary teams Readiness to participate in marine expeditions Fluency in written and spoken English The position is limited to 3 years, beginning as soon as possible. The salary will be paid in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes (TVöD Bund): salary group 13 (66%). Starting date is no later than November 1st 2014. The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.
