Researchers at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University have developed a unique and innovative robot for use as a learning tool in classrooms. The team is looking for a talented, creative, and enthusiastic mobile/iOS developer to help create a software interface for the robot. The ideal candidate would be passionate about helping kids K-12 learn using technology and be proficient at iOS/Objective-C development with a portfolio of released apps on the iTunes App Store. The candidate would be comfortable planning and structuring large applications and building functionality piece by piece as part of a software team. Finally, the candidate would have an eye for design and have experience making graphically rich and responsive applications featuring animations and custom UI elements.

Responsibilities include:

Plan the system architecture and implementation details for iOS apps that interface with hardware. Work with the educational robotics team and UX designers to develop and refine software specifications for visual programming and curriculum sharing apps. Help define the robot API and assist with robot firmware development as needed. Take proof of concept designs through prototyping and production readiness. Develop the front-end iOS-based system for controlling and interfacing with educational robots, following iOS/mobile best practices. Interpret and implement specifications to specified requirements within defined timelines. Take part in design reviews and update the team on progress. Identify critical components and potential roadblocks in the software development process and propose solutions. * Test, debug, and optimize apps to ensure that they meet functional requirements regarding speed, robustness, efficiency, and consistency. This may include the development of unit tests to verify functionality and/or focus groups. Collect and integrate feedback from team and external sources. Update specifications based on feedback and/or changing needs. Ensure accurate documentation for internal and external use.

Basic Qualifications: A BS in computer science or a related degree with a proven track record of production quality software or related experience is required.

Additional Qualifications: MS or PhD is preferred. One or more years of related experience preferred. The ability to translate wireframes and specifications into functional apps and manage implementation details with minimal oversight is necessary. Experience with child-centered software design is a plus, so are strong communication and documentation skills and the willingness to work with a multidisciplinary team.

Additional Information: This is a term position for two years with the possibility of renewal.
