_Purpose_ The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for the Liane Russell Distinguished Early Career Fellowship. This fellowship, named for Dr. Liane Russell, ORNL's groundbreaking female geneticist, is an integral part of ORNL's diversity recruiting effort, helping to attract a diverse workforce of scientists and engineers to pursue a path of scientific excellence with substantially contributing to ORNL and the US Department of Energy (DOE) missions and goals. This fellowship provides funding support over a period of three years for candidates with proven exceptional talent, along with formal mentorship and guidance designed to facilitate successful long term integration and alignment of their research activities with DOE programs. Fellows are expected to conduct research of the highest quality and impact, aim to pursue long-term careers with ORNL, elevate the reputation of the Laboratory, and become scientific leaders in their field.

_Major Duties/Responsibilities_ Selected Russell Fellows demonstrate potential to develop into ORNL's future scientific and technical leaders. Russell Fellows are expected to pursue independent research of high quality and high impact within their areas of interest and expertise as outlined in their research proposals. Areas of interest could include, but are not limited to biosciences, chemistry, computer science, earth and atmospheric sciences, engineering, materials science, mathematics, nuclear sciences and engineering, and physics. Once hired, Russell Fellows will be expected to work with the supporting research divisions to develop a plan for their research area to become a sustainable, long term program with ORNL.

_Qualifications Required_ Candidates must have received their PhD within the past seven years. Candidates must have demonstrated excellent academic records (as shown in their PhD transcripts), exceptional professional promise as evidenced by societal awards, high impact publications, peer recognition and other accomplishments early in their career.

A concise but thorough research plan (up to 5 pages) that describes a grand challenge idea, its significance, and a specific research approach (template will be supplied by ORNL)
