TheGreenGrok and Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment
What Is TheGreenGrok.com?
TheGreenGrok.com is a blog about science and sustainability written by Duke University’s Dr. Bill Chameides, dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment.
Chameides, a member of the National Academy of Sciences and an academic with more than 30 years experience, understands that an important first step toward a more sustainable path is knowledge. Before deciding what to do about the environment, grasping what is happening and why is critical. At www.thegreengrok.com Chameides conversationally tackles advanced environmental topics, opening a dialogue aimed at furthering readers’ understanding of the science and the issues. (Meet Team Grok.)
What Is Duke’s Nicholas School? The Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University is a world-renowned graduate and professional school for the interdisciplinary study of the environment. Its mission is to foster knowledge and train leaders of consequence for a sustainable future. Our educational paradigm aims to understand the interplay between the Earth and its environment and the human institutions that govern our lives and use that understanding to advance and spread the environmental ethic.
With roughly 100 faculty, the Nicholas School engages with scientists, governments, industry leaders, conservation practitioners, and communities globally to address critical issues such as climate change, energy, water quality, ecosystem conservation, and human and environmental health
How Does the Nicholas School Help Its Students Find Environmental Solutions?Recognizing that all of us the globe over contribute to environmental problems, the Nicholas School appreciates we all must be part of the solution.
Science-based problem-solving, effective environmental management, and hands-on education are the Nicholas School’s stock in trade. Hailing from dozens of countries, our graduates are helping shape a more sustainable world
What Are Some of the Nicholas School’s Recent Initiatives? We have begun development of a new educational paradigm to train the hybrid professional of the future with knowledge of business and finance, law, and engineering as well as environmental science and policy.
As another step in forging a sustainable future, we have founded a new education and research program in energy and environment that focuses on the design of energy systems that are clean, economic and reliable.
We plan to initiate a new Duke international professional masters program in environmental management, that will use a combination of place-based and real-time distance-based learning to link Duke faculty with students around the world.
When Was the Nicholas School Established at Duke?Officially formed in 1991, the Nicholas School of the Environment has roots in Duke’s School of Forestry and Duke Marine Lab, both of which were established in 1938. In 1997, Duke’s Department of Geology, established in 1936, joined the school to form the Division of Earth and Ocean Sciences.
Where Is the Nicholas School Located? Our two main locations are in North Carolina on Duke’s main campus in Durham and the university’s Marine Lab in Beaufort, while our summer internship program dispatches students around the globe.
