Cosmic Frontiers II

In Part II of this 2-part course, Dr. Pankaj Joshi will focus on cutting-edge research, theories and developments in astrophysics and cosmology today. Students will learn how black holes and space-time singularities arise, their unusual properties and relationship to other phenomena such as quasars. Dr. Joshi will also discuss how investigations into the gravitational collapse of massive stars relate to quantum gravity theory and the implications for our understanding of the universe.

In Cosmic Frontiers, Dr. Pankaj Joshi, Senior Professor at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, will provide an overview of the most recent developments in astrophysics and cosmology. Students will learn about the exciting possibilities offered by the Einstein theory of gravity, such as causality, space-time singularities and time travel. Dr. Joshi will also discuss emerging investigations of the gravitational collapse of massive stars and what those data could mean for in general relativity and a unified theory of physics.

This course provides an introduction to the cutting-edge research looking to solve the most complex problems in modern astrophysics and black hole physics. Recently, the mainstream media has shown considerable interest in these basic questions, and the student, by taking this course, will be much better equipped to understand and appreciate emerging developments in this exciting frontier.

Course Objectives

  • Discuss cutting-edge research on the final fate of massive collapsing stars in the universe and to review related recent observations and discoveries
  • Explain how black holes and space-time singularities arise, which are most intriguing concepts on nature of space and time, and to relate to observed phenomena such as quasars, radio galaxies, jets and others
  • Discuss some of the most unusual properties of space-time singularities, including naked singularities and to consider their implications for astrophysics and cosmology
  • Examine cosmic conundrums such as the Cosmic Censorship Hypothesis and others and implications of its violations for relativistic astrophysics
  • Describe how cosmic phenomena such as singularities and collapsing stars could provide us with an astrophysical lab for quantum gravity
