TUNNEL TRAIN:

The tracks you see here, emerging from the uptown tunnel, are not subway rails. Those will be laid on an elevated concrete platform. These tracks carry a small train that transports debris from the tunnel boring machine inside this tunnel to the rear of the construction site.....[ More ]

TOOLS OF THE TRADE:

Some of the equipment used in the dig is shown here. Just behind it, water can be seen seeping through the rock wall, leaving rust-colored stains. Because the construction site is situated below the water table, moisture is a constant problem.....[ More ]

TAKING ATTENDANCE:

This "Tag In Tag Out" board, kept at street level by the entrance to the dig, shows who is inside the tunnel at all times. As workers enter the tunnel, they turn their tags from the blue side to the red side.....[ More ]

AIR BAG:

At the time of our visit in April, workers had completed the downtown tunnel (pictured) and were starting work on the uptown tunnel. The yellow tubing brings fresh air from the surface down to the workers.....[ More ]
