Famous "Spike Through the Brain" Case Yields New Insights

Phineas Gage (1823–1860) was a railroad foreman who had an entire brain lobe destroyed by an iron rod penetrating his skull. He's now helping scientists understand how white matter engages with the rest of the brain to affect behavior.
