Since then, psychedelic drugs have had a reputation mostly as a dangerous hippie pastime. Science writer Pollan examines what these chemicals might teach us about consciousness and the brain and even gives them a try himself—taking LSD in a yurt in an unnamed American mountain range under the guidance of a Bavarian ex-con.
