This NSCAT image shows ocean surface wind speeds and directions
over the Pacific Ocean on September 21, 1996. The white arrows
show the direction of the wind. Typhoons Violet and Tom are the
yellow-orange spiral features in the western Pacific (upper
left), near Japan. (Typhoon Tom is in the open ocean; typhoon
Violet is just south of Japan.) Strong winter storm activity
appears as orange patterns in the southern hemisphere.
