Elizabeth (Betsy) Southerland earned a PhD in Environmental Science and Engineering from Virginia Tech where she is a member of the Academy of Distinguished Alumni. At the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, she worked for 10 years in the Superfund program and 23 years in the Water program, retiring as the Director of the Office of Science and Technology in the Office of Water in 2017. For her career accomplishments at the USEPA, she was awarded the Presidential Distinguished Executive Award in 2015.
