Curtis W. Marean is Foundation Professor at the Institute of Human Origins at Arizona State University and honorary professor at the Center for Coastal Palaeoscience at Nelson Mandela University in South Africa. He studies the origins of modern humans, the prehistory of Africa, paleoclimates and paleoenvironments, and animal bones from archaeological sites. Marean is particularly interested in human occupation of coastal ecosystems. He is the principal investigator for the South African Coast Paleoclimate, Paleoenvironment, Paleoecology, Paleoanthropology (SACP4) project, funded by the National Science Foundation.
