McKiernan is a researcher in medical sciences and a member of the newly-formed research group for Mathematical Modeling of Micro and Macro Systems in Public Health at the National Institute of Public Health of Mexico. Her research focuses on computational problems in neuroscience, physiology, and epidemiology.
