Stories by Samantha Dempsey

Samantha Dempsey is a designer, illustrator and innovator living in the gray area where art and science combine. She's currently exploring that space in Boston, Mass. as an experience designer at Mad*Pow. She found her way to experience design by following her chops as an illustrator and through her passion for healthcare. Painting watercolors of bacteria turned into designing kits to collect visual patient narratives at the Mayo Clinic. Her background in illustration flavors her approach to experience design as she incorporates narrative flow, visual storytelling and sequential art into her work.

Samantha studied Illustration and Science Communication during her recent undergraduate work at the Rhode Island School of Design. She was awarded a Maharam STEAM fellowship which she brought to the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation where she conducted research into visualizing patient narratives and created tools to help clinicians and patients communicate. While at RISD, she participated in the Brown/RISD-backed Design for America team where she co-founded the Empathy Box project to help families with autism share their stories.

When she's not painting bacteria or talking with patients, Samantha reads and illustrates far too many books. You can see both her illustrations as well as her work in experience design at www.samanthadempsey.com.
