
Free Will Is Only an Illusion if You Are, Too
New research findings, combined with philosophy, suggest free will is real but may not operate in the ways people expect
Tomáš Dominik is an experimental psychologist at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Brain and Behavioral Sciences at Chapman University. He studies physiological and neural correlates of consciousness and volition. In his research, Dominik replicated neuroscientist Benjamin Libet’s 1980s experiment on brain activity and people’s reported intention, or urge, to move but also showed a problem with Libet’s method of “measuring” this intention.
