What is the nerdiest or most unusual way you or someone you know has celebrated Pi Day?

This year people in Scientific American’s New York office brought in pies ahead of Pi Day, but we know there must be stranger and more interesting ways to celebrate the iconic number. How have you or people you know celebrated Pi Day? What are the most interesting ways pi comes up in your work or everyday life? Is there another number you think deserves more attention?

For me, Pi Day is more than a celebration of a mathematical constant. π represents one of the deepest patterns in nature and science. It appears in geometry, wave mechanics, probability theory, and signal processing—the same mathematical foundations that modern computing, artificial intelligence, and digital networks rely on.

As an educator and technology advocate in Ghana, I celebrate Pi Day by introducing students and communities to the power of mathematics in shaping the digital future. Through initiatives connected to blockchain education and emerging decentralized platforms such as Pi Network, I encourage young people to see mathematics not just as classroom theory but as a practical tool for building real-world technologies.

Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and decentralized systems all depend heavily on mathematics—statistics, optimization, and data modeling—where constants like π quietly play a role behind the scenes. In that sense, π feels almost like a universal bridge connecting mathematics, nature, and the intelligent systems humanity is now creating.

Another number that deserves attention alongside π is Euler’s number (e), which governs growth, learning processes, and many natural phenomena. Together, π and e form part of the hidden architecture of the scientific and technological world.

For communities like ours in Africa, Pi Day is also a reminder that the language of mathematics belongs to everyone, everywhere—and that the next generation of innovators can emerge from any classroom.

Your story inspired me to make this little tutorial about flipping your way to pi.

Happy Pi Day!

Every year I make elaborate pies or hand pies and have a little math party with my friends or students! 🥧

This year I wrote a pi article and a bunch of math themed Spellements for SciAm which I never would have guessed I’d be doing last year!

By writing a Pi Day limerick:

π Day

In Greek “π” is pronounced as “pee”

Didn’t know that, it’s real news to me

But I just can’t envision

Making such a decision

Saying “Pee Day” on each March 14

HeyNerds!

Doing everything in a circle for pi day

I run an online music group.

Though I am neurotypical, a large number of our group are neurodiverse.

We are having a "Pi Day" theme on Saturday, with musicians playing songs about Maths/Maths

I will be playing "3 point 1 4" by Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine, and a musical adaptation of "Auguries of Innocence" by William Blake, because it references "infinity in the palm of your hand"

Jonathan Coulton songs will definitely feature. Monty Python's Galaxy song (speed of light) will probably get played.

Maybe, following Sarah's suggestion, I'll play Nat King Cold.

We are all "COVID conscious", and I will be contributing to a Long COVID Awareness event on 15th March.

A huge competition at my middle school where the kid who could memorize the most digits of pi got to throw a pie in the math teacher's face in front of the entire school. Very legendary event

For some reason as kids my brother and I memorized digits of pi to the tune of “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” I have no explanation for this.
