Dutch Waterways and Tulip Fields
A River Cruise with Eric Sullivan
Highlights
Join Scientific American Travel for a river cruise through the Netherlands, a country that has spent centuries at the forefront of environmental management and agricultural innovation. Traveling by small ship through historic canals and waterways, you’ll sail past picturesque villages, towering windmills and colorful tulip fields at the height of the springtime bloom. Please note that the tulip bloom is weather-dependent and peak timing is not guaranteed.
Begin and end in Amsterdam, a city shaped as much by technological ingenuity as by art and commerce. Vist UNESCO World Heritage Site Kinderdjik, explore historic towns of Haarlem and Gouda, and learn about Holland’s flower trade during visits to Hortus Bulborum and Keukenhof Gardens. Investigate the systems that allow life to flourish below sea level, from wind-powered technologies and modern flood defenses to advanced horticultural and global food logistics. From complex infrastructure to living laboratories where sustainability is not theoretical but essential, this is an opportunity to examine how science, engineering and ecology intersect in one of the world’s most carefully managed landscapes.
