FEEDING 13 HUNGRY FOSSIL HUNTERS three meals a day for a month isn't easy. Indeed, groceries took up much of the space available in and on the vehicles on the drive from Madagascar's capital city, Antananarivo, to the field area. And still, over the course of the expedition, team members had to make several trips to the nearest town to restock. A sampling of the supplies they brought with them initially follows.

  • 120 kilograms of rice

  • 120 loaves of french bread

  • 20 kilograms of beans

  • 20 cans of jalapeo peppers

  • six 40-ounce jars of crunchy peanut butter

  • five 40-ounce jars of creamy peanut butter

  • four pounds of coffee

  • around 50 liters of coke

  • around 100 liters of beer

  • 24 power bars (for emergencies)

  • 40 pounds of candy (M&Ms, Starbursts, raspberry Twizzlers and jelly beans)
