A double salt of hyposulphite of gold and of soda, known by French daguerreotypists as the " salt of gold," has been lately obtained, says the "Lumire," by a French chemist, M. Engler, of the greatest purity and perfectly white. The total loss of property by fires in California during the past three years, is estimated at sixty-six millions of dollarsmore than has been destroyed by fire in all thereat ' the United States during the last ten years.
