Winner of the 2021 President’s Award — Margaret Stauffer

One in three people with cancer experiences anxiety, depression or an adjustment disorder, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. For more than 30 years, Margaret Stauffer has worked to help people affected by cancer alleviate that distress. Stauffer is the chief mission officer at Cancer Support Community in the San Francisco Bay Area, which is part of an organization that creates networks of care for patients around the world. Over the course of her career, she has developed psychosocial support programs in both English and Spanish, counseled thousands of cancer patients and their families, served as a psychosocial oncology expert both locally and nationally, and trained hundreds of therapists.
